Jalebi ~ Part 10

“I can’t believe my Akash is getting married!”

“Mamiji why are you finding it so hard to believe, we all knew Akash would get married one day, it’s Chote that is the problem.”

“Di! I’m right here!”

“I know you are! That’s why I’m saying it! Come on Chote, you need to start thinking about settling down too. Akash is younger than you and he’s already ready to get married.”

“He’s only a little bit younger than me Di. It’s no big deal that he’s getting married before me.”

“I know, but you haven’t even shown any interest in getting married yet.”

“I just haven’t met the right person yet.”

“And when do you think you will find a woman suitable for the great Arnav Singh Raizada?”

Arnav looked up from his laptop at this point and stopped. His mind instantly went to Khushi and he couldn’t help but smile.

“Oh my god! Chote! I see that smile! There’s someone on your radar isn’t there?!”

Arnav shook his head and shut his laptop.

“Di! When the time comes and when I find someone, you will be the first to know, I promise.”

With that, Arnav got to his feet and left the room.

Anjali turned to Mamiji and smiled.

“He so has someone on his radar.”

*****

Khushi was busy putting a few clothes into her little suitcase when Payal came running into the room.

“Guess what!”

“What?”

“The Raizada’s have picked a date for the engagement!”

“They have? When is it?”

“Exactly a month from now!”

“No way?”

“Babuji said that they said they didn’t see why they should wait for the engagement when I’m already wearing a ring in Akash’s name!”

“Jiji, I’m so excited for you!”

“I can’t believe this is happening!”

“Have they said when the wedding is going to be?”

“No they haven’t, but Babuji said that he doesn’t think that it will be too long after the engagement, but they will finalise dates on the day of the engagement!”

Khushi hugged her sister and she felt as though her heart was going to explode with happiness. Payal had loved Akash since she knew was love was, and now they were going to get married! Khushi had always liked Akash. In high school he had always backed her up when everyone else would tease her, and as an adult, he opened up a whole new world for her, a world where her work would be far more appreciated than ever before. And she also had to he grateful to him because if it wasn’t for him, then she probably wouldn’t have Arnav in her life now. Things between her and Arnav were weird and they were maintaining a professional relationship, but Khushi knew that her feelings for Arnav were constantly brewing and he knew it was the same for him too.

“Khushi, I was going to ask, how long are you going to London for?”

“Maybe a week. I doubt I’ll need to stay longer than that.”

“That’s such a long time!”

“It’s only a week, that’s not long at all!”

“I know, but it’s so close to the engagement, I need you here!”

“I know you do, but I promise, 1 week, I won’t go a day over a week. I need to go to this conference and then I need to make sure that I have got everything in order. And I want to stay with mama and papa a few days, I’ve really missed them since I’ve been here. I haven’t seen them much at all since I’ve started this deal with Arnav.”

“Khushi you need to bring Maasi and Mausaji back with you!”

“I will definitely tell them! But I don’t know if they will come back, they haven’t been back here in years and years and I don’t think they will want to come back.”

“I know all that, but please, it’s my wedding and I want all my family here with me.”

Hugging Payal again, Khushi promised that she would try her best to convince her parents to come to India with her.

Khushi’s parents had moved to England a long time ago. They had moved to England when Khushi was only 8. Initially they had taken Khushi with them, but for some reason, even after a year Khushi just wasn’t settling in and she wasn’t doing well at school. So after talking to Payal’s parents, they had decided that it would be best for Khushi to go back to India and stay there with Payal and her parents until Khushi was old enough to make her own decisions and go back to England. Shashi and Garima loved Khushi, but they weren’t keen on the idea of a daughter being so far away from her parents like this. Regardless of their reservations towards the situation, they took care of Khushi as there own, and sure enough, when Khushi was ready she did go back. But Khushi had always known that India was her home and this is where she wanted to be. So she was more than ready to kick her life into gear and get settled back down here.

*****

“Arnav, I’m leaving for London tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?”

“Yes, I’ll have a day in between before the conference when I’ll be able to look over all my notes and stuff, I want to prepare over there so I know I know all my points thoroughly.”

“Khushi, I was wondering, can I come with you?”

“Do you want to?”

“Yeah, I do.”

“I don’t see why not, but I’m not sure if you’ll be able to come to the conference.”

“I was invited to the conference, so yeah I will be able to come.”

“That’s alright then! So I’ll see you tomorrow?”

“Yes you will.”

“Have you got a ticket for the flight?”

“No, I’m going to go by my jet. You should come with me.”

“But I already have a ticket with the airlines.”

“I’ll sort that for you but will you come with me on my jet?”

“I mean… Yes! Of course!”

“Great! What time was you’re flight meant to be tomorrow?”

“It was meant to be at 4pm and I have a short layover in Dubai.”

“Okay, we’ll leave at 12pm so we can have a little bit more time in Dubai.”

“Are you sure that’s okay?”

“Are you okay to leave 4 hours earlier than planned?”

“I have no issue at all.”

“Then let’s do it!”

“I’ll come and pick you up tomorrow at 11:30am.”

“Okay, bye, I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Khushi hung up and couldn’t help but fall into deep thought. What had she just done?

*****

Arnav and Khushi boarded onto Arnav’s private jet and Khushi couldn’t help but gasp as she took it all in. She had expected it to be lavish and fancy, but his jet was nothing like what she had expected.

IMG_0175

The entire interior of the jet was black glass and white leather. There were large leather sofas on either side of the jet ans there were coffee tables by the sofas.

“This is insane!”

“I’m assuming you like it.”

“It’s amazing! But are the seats safe?”

“Don’t worry about the seats. During take off and landing we have special seats nearer the front of the jet. We go there and strap ourselves in. Once we’ve taken off, we can come back into the main area.”

Khushi nodded, still slightly taken aback by everything around her.
Arnav took her hand and led her to another part of the jet.

IMG_0174

Khushi looked around her, utterly mind blown. They were in a bedroom! Along both sides there were sofas and in the middle of the room was a bed. There were also 2 desks, one which had a built in computer and one white was just an empty normal desk.

“I know what you’re thinking, and down worry. The desks are both stuck firmly down to the ground, they won’t go anywhere no matter how the jet moves.”

“Arnav… This is incredible!”

“I’m glad you like it. It took me ages to design this aircraft so that it was just right for me.”

Before they could talk any more, the captain announced that all was ready and set and that they were ready to take off.

Arnav led Khushi back to the seats where they have to sit during take off and landing and they got strapped in. Once they were ready, the jet started moving and moments later, they were in the air. Khushi looked out of the little window and saw them fly above Delhi. She’d always loved flying and she loved the life she had, she was flying all the time. She hadn’t been to see too many places on earth, but she knew that she wanted to visit America one time and she also wanted to go to Australia.

“You can take your belt off.”

Khushi nodded and unbuckled herself as she followed Arnav into the main area of the jet. He took a seat on one of the large sofas and stretched out his arms and legs. Arnav called for a member of the cabin crew.

“How may I help you sir?”

“Can I have my laptop bag please?”

The stewardess nodded and went off to get Arnav’s bag.
Khushi took in her surroundings, still not quite able to believe that she was in a private jet.

“I know what you’re thinking, how can I have a jet. The truth is, this jet cost more than I could actually afford. I put so much money into this, I don’t have much extra left over. But this is something I really wanted. So I decided, I wasn’t going to save up for it and get it at a time when I could buy it and have a lot of money left over. I just bought it.”

Khushi nodded.

“The sensible part of me thinks that you’re crazy. But I can see why you’d want this and honestly, I think you deserve it.”

“Thank you.”

The stewardess returned with Arnav’s laptop bag and handed it to him.

“Sir, whenever you would like to eat, please let us know what you would like and we will see if we are able to prepare that for you.”

“Thank you. But I don’t think we’ll have a meal on this leg of the journey. We may just have tea and coffee at some point.”

The stewardess nodded and left.

“Khushi, if you want to have something, just call the stewards and let them know. If you want a meal that’s fine. But if you don’t, I know a place at the Dubai airport that has the best food.”

Khushi nodded. She felt like that’s all she could do. This whole experience was slightly overwhelming.

“Are you okay?”

“I’m fine, it’s just… All this…”

“It takes a bit of getting used to, I’ll admit that.”

Khushi started flicking through the channels on the tv, she needed to put her attention to something. This situation, as much as it was enjoyable was also slightly awkward. She didn’t know what to talk to Arnav about and Arnav too wasn’t making much conversation.
Khushi found and film and decided to watch it, while Arnav tapped away on his laptop.

*****

The flight to Dubai didn’t take long, 3 and a half hours only. They left the jet and made their way over to a restaurant to get some food.

“Ah, its this one! My absolute favourite. They serve the best Italian food. Their food here is ever better than what you can get in Italy.”

Khushi ordered a pizza and Arnav ordered some spaghetti. They both tucked into their food.

“Wow this really is amazing!”

“I told you! Their food is the best. I always have a layover in Dubai just so I can eat here.”

“Have you been to Italy.”

“Yeah, I have. Maybe I can take you there one day?”

“Maybe you can.”

Arnav placed his hand on Khushi’s and gave it a squeeze. It was almost like he was sealing the deal that they would go to Italy one day. However, before Khushi could read too much into it, he removed his hand and carried on trying to finish his meal.

When they finally finished their food, the bill was paid and they left the restaurant. They walked around the airport, taking in all of the large shops that were there and smelling the food that was served by all the different food places. At one end of the airport was a large water fountain with a whole lot of greenery around it. It looked so beautiful and Khushi couldn’t help but feel super peaceful.

“I really love this airport. It’s one of my favourites in the whole world.”

“I can see why you like it so much.”

“Haven’t you ever stopped here before?”

“I have, but I never really get the chance to explore and look around. I usually book flights where I have the shortest transits.”

“Khushi you’re really missing out. I wish we had more time, I would’ve taken you out and shown you around Dubai. The city itself is so stunning.”

“Maybe we can stop here for longer on our way back and you can show me around.”

“I’d like that.”

Arnav took Khushi’s hand into his and he had the sudden urge to kiss her. He wanted to kiss her, right here. Right now. In the airport of one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Arnav moved in, his eyes fluttering shut. Khushi didn’t really know what was happening, but realised that she too was being drawn into the moment. Arnav’s hand slipped to Khushi’s wrist as he continued to inch closer and closer to her lips…

Jalebi ~ Part 9

IMG_8793

Arnav and Khushi had lead everyone into the dining hall so that food could be served and so people could have dinner.

Everyone took their seats and Arnav and Khushi sat together with important people from the fashion industry.

Arnav had introduced Khushi to everyone and had explained to her who they were and why they were important to them. But Khushi’s head really wasn’t in the conversation.
Her eyes were fixed on Akash and Payal. They were sat close together, heads close, in deep conversation. She had to admit, they looked super cute together and she couldn’t help but feel excited for Payal. She knew how Payal had felt about Akash when they were in high school and it was evident that those feelings were still there between then.

“Khushi?”

Khushi was brought out of her thoughts by Arnav’s hand on her arm.

“Is the food okay?”

“It’s fine.”

“You haven’t eaten much?”

“I’m just too excited to eat, to be honest with you.”

Arnav smiled and nodded and then went back to his previous conversation. Khushi too went back to her own thoughts. Would Payal and Akash get married soon? Would she be able to design Payal’s wedding gown? Khushi could feel the excitement bubble through her and she couldn’t wait for what was to happen next.

*****

Dinner was over and a lot of the guests had made their way over to the bar. A couple of their guests had hit the dance floor. Arnav and Khushi were still floating around, making sure that all their guests were well looked after.

As he watched his guests on the dance floor, Arnav realised he wanted to dance with Khushi. At least once.
He made his way over to her when he finally saw her alone.

“Hey.”

“Hi.”

“You enjoying the party?”

“Yes! It’s going great! Everyone seems to be really enjoying themselves.”

“Are you having a good time?”

“Of course I am.”

Arnav felt a little nervous, he didn’t know how to ask her. Realising that he needed to stop being so silly, her cleared his throat and held his hand out to Khushi.

“Can I have the honour to have at least this one dance with you?”

Khushi smiled a wide smile and took his hand.

“I thought you’d never ask!”

He led her onto the middle of the dance floor and when Aman saw them, he clapped, bringing everyone’s attention onto Arnav and Khushi.

“Everyone’s looking at us.”

“Well it is our party, so if they want to look, let them.”

Arnav placed his hand on Khushi’s waist and she placed her hand on his chest. They swayed to the music and the lights of the hall began to dim. The attention shifted away from Arnav and Khushi and people went back to whatever they were doing.

“I’ve enjoyed tonight.”

“I have too.”

“Thanks for being my date.”

“It was my pleasure.”

They danced, enjoying each other’s company. They talked about all the things that had gone well that evening and what they wanted to do next.

One dance became two dances and two dances became three dances. Soon they just kept dancing to every song that came on. Slowly guests began to leave and the hall emptied. Arnav and Khushi remained absorbed in each other. They were enjoying each other’s company, each other’s warmth…

*****

“Wow would you look at the time?”

Arnav and Khushi broke away from each other and looked around them. The guests had all gone and the staff were starting to tidy up. Khushi brushed her hair behind her ear and smiled shyly. They had gotten so absorbed in each and had dance the night away. She could see Akash and Payal, still dancing slowly to the soft music playing. They looked so happy together, so intimate.

Arnav moved away and went over to talk to Aman and that’s when it happened. Khushi saw Akash drop to his knee and he pulled a ring box out of his suit jacket. She rushed over to Arnav and pointed to Akash and Payal.

“Did you know about this?!”

“No! I didn’t know he was going to propose tonight?”

The scene that was playing out in front of Arnav wasn’t making any sense. He knew that Akash was interested in Payal but he never thought that they would get married. How could Akash be going this if his aim in life was to steal Khushi’s business. Unless… Maybe he’d realised that stealing Khushiyan for Khushi isn’t what he wanted. Maybe he’d realised that all he wanted was to settle down with a woman he loved?

His attention shifted back to Payal and Akash. Akash was on his knee while Payal had her hand clasped over her mouth.

“Payal… I’ve wanted to be with you for the longest time ever. We decided to call things off in high school before you left, but we always said that if our love was real we would find our way back to each other. Well look, we have found our way back to each other and that’s enough for me. Our love is real and is true. And because of that, I want to marry you. So, will you do me the honours?”

Khushi squealed with job and took hold of Arnav’s hand. She squeezed it tightly and she tried to contain her joy.

“Of course! YES. Of course I will marry you!”

Akash smiled and he slipped the ring onto Payal’s finger. Payal, with tears in her eyes looks over to where Khushi is standing and gestures her to come over. Arnav and Khushi walk over to where the newly engaged couple are standing. Khushi rushes over as fast as she can, whereas Arnav takes his time, trying to make sense of what’s going on.

Khushi hugged Payal and Arnav gave Akash a fist bump.

“Congratulations! I can’t believe this is happening!”

“You can’t believe this is happening? Think how I’m feeling! When we left home today I didn’t think I’d go home engaged.”

Akash laughed as he wrapped his arm around Payal.

“Let’s see the ring then!”

Payal waved the ring to Khushi. The ring was a big solitaire diamond on a white gold ring.

“Wow! It’s beautiful! Akash, you’ve really pulled this one off.”

“I’m glad you approve! I’m assuming we have you’re blessing?”

“Of course you do! I’ve been ready for you to propose to jiji since we were in high school.”

Khushi and Payal hugged and they both squealed with joy. Akash turned to Arnav and raised an eyebrow at the girls.

“I didn’t know you were planning on proposing?”

“I’ve been wanting to for a while but the moment didn’t feel right.”

“I didn’t know you had the intention to propose any time soon at all.”

“Well… What can I say, I wanted to surprise the family.”

Arnav nodded, not quite understanding what Akash was playing at. But he knew he would need to talk to his cousin. If he was marrying Payal for something related to Khushi’s business. He wouldn’t let him do that. He can’t play someone like that.

*****

Akash and Payal were on their way home. Akash wanted to talk to Payal’s parents before she told them on her own. Ideally he would have wanted to speak to them first, but if he had then the proposal wouldn’t have been a surprise.

*****

Arnav and Khushi were in Arnav’s car, on their way back to Payal’s. They were taking their time because they wanted Akash to speak to the elders before they got back.
Khushi spoke excitedly about what the future held for Payal and Akash but Arnav still couldn’t help but feel skeptical. It didn’t make sense. He wanted to steal Payal’s cousins business from her, but then he was also marrying Payal? How would that make any sense.

After speaking for a while, Khushi realised that Arnav wasn’t listening to her at all.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing, its just… Don’t you think this engagement has come out of nowhere?”

“Not really. I mean they were so serious about each other in high school and now they’ve been getting to know each other again for the past year or so. It was bound to happen at some point so I guess Akash didn’t want to long the process out.”

“But doesn’t it seem weird that he hadn’t mentioned proposing at all?”

“I don’t know what you’re trying to get at, but they’re happy. However they have come to this stage, they’ve done it. And we have to be happy for them and support them.”

Arnav nodded, to show Khushi that he was taking what she was saying into account. But the truth was, he was confused as hell and he wasn’t going to rest until he had spoken to Akash and tried to work out what his game was.

*****

“Oh Akash, you’re already here? Didn’t take too long to convince the folks I see.”

“Nah they didn’t take much convincing. Once they realised that me and Payal loved each other and I flashed the Raizada name, they were so whipped, they would’ve gotten us married on the spot if they could.”

Arnav nodded as he poured two glasses of whiskey. He handed one over to Akash. He sat at the bar stool and lifted the glass.

“To your engagement.”

“To my engagement.”

They both took a sip of their drinks. Arnav, just a tiny sip, but Akash downed his entire glass in one go and then filled his glass again.

“But really bro, explain to me, what’s the reason behind this rushed engagement.”

“There’s really no ulterior motive, I want to marry Payal. So why wait?”

“Because how can you plan on starting a life with her when you want to steal her sisters business.”

“Very easily bhai. You just have to keep your eye on the prize. Here, I’ve got two prizes. The first, is a 50% share of Khushiyan and the second is Payal.”

“But won’t it cause a problem between you and Payal when she realises we’ve taken Khushi’s business.”

“Not if she never realises that we’ve taken the business.”

“But how can you…”

Akash stopped Arnav.

“Some plans are better left a secret until the time is right. For now bhai, just carry on the way they have been going.”

Arnav shook his head. None of this was making sense. Akash wasn’t making sense. What was his damn game?

Akash downed the last of his drink and got to his feet. He said goodnight and was ready to go to his own room when he turned to Arnav.

“By the way bhai, I saw how you were with her today. I can tell you want to get into her pants.”

“I don’t…”

But before Arnav could finish what he was saying, Akash was already gone. Akash was still ready to steal Khushi’s business, his aim, after all this time still hadn’t changed. Arnav shook his head, he couldn’t let that happen. He couldn’t let Akash take Khushi’s happiness away from her like that. He’d never been for this plan, and now, getting to know Khushi, he definitely couldn’t do it. But how was he going to stop Akash? Arnav may be the face of this plan, but Akash was the brains and Arnav knew, that unless something was done, Akash wouldn’t stop. He needed to do something, but how?

Jalebi ~ Part 8

IMG_8793

Khushi had been back in India a week and everything was starting to fall into place. She had been to visit the potential properties that Arnav had found for her, but none of them were just right. If the apartment was fine, then it was too far from the office and if it was close to the office then the apartment wasn’t the right size for her.

After much deliberation and insistence from Arnav, she had agreed to his offer of staying at his apartment. Arnav had said she could stay their indefinitely, however, Khushi made sure that he knew that this was a temporary solution until she found the perfect place and that she would be paying his rent.

Despite Arnav making it clear that that was completely unnecessary, Khushi still felt that she needed to pay rent. It was decided she would move out of Payal’s family home when she came back from London after the conference.

*****

Saturday night rolled around and Khushi and Payal were getting ready for the merger party of AR and Khushiyan. Khushi had selected saris for her and Payal to wear. They were exclusive Khushiyan designs saris which were to be launched later in the year, just before Diwali.

“I can’t believe I’m wearing a designer sari! One that hasn’t even been released yet.”

“Get used to it Payal! From here onwards, you’ll only ever wear exclusive designs.”

“Khushi, really, I’m so grateful.”

“I know you are jiji. But honestly, if I don’t share my designs with you and have you model them, who else is going to?”

Payal hugged Khushi and held onto her.

“I’ve really missed having you around.”

“I’ve really missed being around.”

The girls were brought out of their moment by the doorbell ringing.

“It’s definitely Arnav, Akash is never early.”

Khushi laughed and left the room to see if it was Arnav or not. Payal was right, it was Arnav. He was wearing a black suit with a crisp white shirt and a crimson tie.

“Hey.”

“Hi.”

“You look beautiful.”

“Thank you, you don’t look too bad yourself.”

Arnav smirked and he took Khushi in. She was wearing a deep crimson sari (hence why he was wearing a crimson tie). The sari itself was relatively plain, but the blouse was something else altogether. It was heavily embroidered in silver with long sleeves. The sari hung onto every curve perfectly and enhanced Khushi’s already perfect body.

“Should we get going?”

Khushi nodded and grabbed her clutch bag and called out to everyone in the house that she was leaving.

*****

“So the guests aren’t meant to arrive until 9. The caters are already there, I checked before I came to collect you. They should have everything set by now.”

“They have got the little appetisers that I asked for right?”

“Yeah they’ve got those. The hotel staff said they would have them warmed up by the time the first guests start arriving.”

“And when are we speaking, at half 9?”

“Yes, we will do our opening speeches at half 9, you first and then me and then together. After that we will let everyone know that dinner will be served.”

“After dinner it will be an open bar and people will start making their way into the dance hall.”

“Yes exactly. Although I doubt many people will stay after dinner.”

Arnav and Khushi made sure that they knew what the plan for the evening was. They arrived at the hotel and Arnav helped Khushi out of the car.

They made their way over to the hotel door and the doorman held it open for them.

Khushi looked around the hotel lobby and smiled. It was all glass and crystal, just as how she’d wanted it to be. Arnav placed his hand on the small of her back and led her over to the banquet hall.

The tables had been moved and arranged so that they were more towards the back of the hall and a big platform had been set up at the front.

The servers were standing by the sides, dishes and dishes of food ready on the side, waiting the arrival of the guests.

Khushi went over to the food just to check that everything was alright.

“You really got everything perfectly done didn’t you Arnav?”

“You wanted perfection and I made sure I got the best in the city to get it done for you.”

“I really appreciate this.”

Khushi threw her arms around Arnav and hugged him to say thanks. He wrapped his arms around her and pressed his face into her shoulder, taking in her scent.

What was meant to be a friendly hug somehow managed to intensify by a million when Khushi wrapped her arms tightly around Arnav neck and pressed her own face into his chest.

Arnav’s arms dropped round to Khushi’s waist and he pulled her into himself, the lower half of their bodies touching.

Khushi pulled away ever so slightly, her hands dropping to his chest as she looked up into his dark caramel coloured eyes. Arnav looked into Khushi’s eyes, his hands cupped her face.

“Ahem…”

Arnav and Khushi jumped apart and Arnav found Aman standing by them, eyes averted.

“Er, Aman… Did you need something.”

“The tech guys just wanted to make sure that the mic was working.”

“Right, yeah, okay, I’m coming.”

Arnav turned to look at Khushi who was running her fingers through her hair and sighed. The occurrence of something like this just showed how much they wanted each other. An innocent hug shouldn’t have got so intense, it shouldn’t have made him want to kiss the daylights out of her like that.

Arnav turned away and made his way to the sound deck and Khushi was left watching him go. What the hell was going on. Khushi made a mental not to herself that she needed to stay away from Arnav. What they wanted, what could have happened, CAN’T happen.

*****

The guests began to file in and Arnav and Khushi stood together in the lobby greeting people. A lot of these people Khushi hadn’t had the chance to meet yet, so Arnav was introducing them all to her.

When everyone had arrived, there was a flood of people, talking to each other about the business venture that was beginning. When the time arrived, Arnav took to the stage.

“Welcome ladies and gentlemen, thank you all so much for being here tonight to celebrate the merger of my business with that of Miss Khushi Kumari Gupta. Before I say any more, please welcome Miss Gupta who has prepared a few words.”

There was polite applause as Khushi went to the stage to take the mic from Arnav who then stepped aside.

“Firstly I would like to reiterate what Arnav just said and I would like to thank everyone for being here tonight. It means a lot to me and I’m sure it means equally as much to Arnav.

I’m not the best at making speeches but I guess I would like to start by saying that my business, is everything to me. My business is my baby. All my love and effort has been poured into the business and I was very hesitate in joining with another business, but then I realised, that this merge would be the best thing that could happen to my company. AR Designs has a lot of global recognition in its own accord but now, by linking our names together and really taking our companies where they weren’t before, we’re breaking a lot more barriers.

I would also like to take this moment to thank Arnav, for being supportive and for really helping me out in terms of getting things going. Thank you Arnav, one couldn’t wish for a better business partner.”

Khushi turned and nodded to Arnav who started clapping and then the rest of the guests too started clapping. Arnav walked over to the stage and Khushi handed the mic over to him.

“Thank you Khushi and this merge means a lot to me too. My business is very close to my heart as well, and everyone here knows how much time and effort I have put into my business to get it where it is. I have missed birthdays and parties, I even missed my sisters engagement for my business, that’s how much AR Designs means to me. The merge with Khushiyan is integral if I want to make my brand well established worldwide.

This is the start of something new and I cannot wait to see where this journey takes me and Khushi and our businesses.”

Arnav gestured to Khushi who came back and stood beside Arnav.

“This is the start of a new chapter, and it means the world to me and Khushi that you all have come here today to celebrate with us.
I would like to ask you all to raise a glass to new beginning.”

“To new beginnings!”

Despite Khushi’s insistence that Arnav shouldn’t pick her up from the airport, he was still waiting at arrivals when her plan landed. He had a bunch of flowers and was holding up a card saying Khushi. The moment Khushi got out, he was able to see her. He waved and Khushi smiled as she walked over towards him.

“Hey! I thought I told you not to worry.”

“I know what you said, but I haven’t seen you in a while so I thought I may as well come and pick you up.”

“You didn’t need to, but thank you.”

Arnav hands Khushi the flowers.

“These are beautiful.”

“Do you want to grab some food before I drop you off home?”

“I’m okay, I ate on the plane.”

“You sure?”

“Yup.”

They walked across the airport, talking about Khushi’s flight and how she really needed to sleep when she got home.

They left the airport and Arnav led Khushi towards the car park where he had left his car. It didn’t take them long to find Arnav’s car and he walked over to Khushi’s side and opened the door for her. He then took Khushi’s baggage and put it into the back of the car. While Arnav was filling the trunk with her stuff, she turned and looked to the back seat where her and Arnav had made out.
She couldn’t help but smile. She knew it wasn’t meant to have happened, but she couldn’t deny that it felt good and it was enjoyable. He did something to her, made her feel and want things she hadn’t wanted before. Khushi shook her head and turned away as Arnav got into his seat.

“So how does it feel?”

“How does what feel?”

“Knowing that you live her full time now.”

“I feels surreal to be honest, but I haven’t moved here permanently just yet.”

“What do you mean?”

“There’s a conference in London next month, and I need to go. So I’ve brought most of my stuff over but I’ve still got stuff that needs to be brought, but I’ll bring it back with me next time.”

“You didn’t tell me about a conference? What’s it for?”

“Just a fashion industry conference.”

“Ohh.”

Khushi took her phone out and started scrolling through.

“The conference is on the 1st of July. I think I’m going to come back to India on the 4th.”

Arnav nodded as he carried on driving along.

The journey to Payal’s house was a long one. Khushi, Payal and her uncle and aunt had decided for this month before the conference she would live with them.

However, Khushi had insisted that when she came back she wanted to move into her own place. She had justified this choice by saying that she wanted to be close to the office and because she had lived alone for so long, she didn’t think she would be able to feel comfortable.

Garima and Shashi said they understood and said that they were fine with her decision.
Khushi had asked Arnav to help her find potential apartments for her to live in while her one was being decorated.

“Have you found anything?”

“I had selected a couple and I’ll forward all the details over to you, but I don’t know if you’ll like them much.”

“Honestly, for now, I just need something. I don’t want to impose on my uncle and aunt for too long.”

“My offer still stands you know. I have a 2 bedroom apartment, you could stay with me. I mean, I hardly stay there myself, I go home most of the time, so mostly you would have the place to yourself but…”

“I don’t think that would be appropriate Arnav.”

Arnav had had the idea that Khushi should stay in his apartment that’s near the office. For most of the year the apartment remained empty, other than the time when Arnav worked late into the night and didn’t want to have to travel over an hour to get home. He also used the apartment when he wanted to have some female company, but he found that as time went on, these occurrences took place less and less often.

The last time he had actually hooked up with anyone was long before Khushi had entered his life. And was adamant that the next time he had any such relations with another woman, the woman would be Khushi.

“But the offer stands any way. If you need a place, you can have my apartment.”

Khushi nodded, showing Arnav that she acknowledged what he was saying.

The drive felt even longer than usual because of all the traffic. They spoke about the potential places that Arnav had found and also talked about some business related ideas that he was having.

“Do you think you’ll be able to have the official merger party at the end of this week? Or do you think you need more time?”

“No, I think we’ve put it off long enough, I think it’s time the world knew that AR and Khushiyan are one.”

“I’ll email you over all the details when I get home.”

“We have to go to the party together, don’t we?”

“Khushi, if you’d rather we went separately we could, but as my business partner, I really would love it if you were my date for the night. I can’t really imagine anyone else I’d rather have beside me.”

Khushi blushed. She knew this didn’t actually mean anything, but the thought that he wanted her beside himself, did something to her.

“I would be honoured.”

Arnav turned to Khushi and smiled. He told her how he’d send her all the details about their party and said how they’d talk later if anything else needed to be sorted.

Soon enough they arrived at Payal’s house where she and her parents were waiting for Khushi. Payal rushed over to the car and hugged Khushi the moment she got out.

“Finally! I’ve been waiting for you all day. There’s so much I need to tell you about. How was your journey?”

Khushi broke the hug and laughed.

“Do you want the entire story before I get into the house or will you let me sit before I tell you everything?”

Payal laughed and went I over to Arnav and gave him a hand as he took out Khushi’s luggage. Shashi and Garima came down and gave Khushi a hug and asked her how her journey was. Garima led Khushi into the house and Shashi, Payal and Arnav brought her suitcases in.

“Khushi I’ll take my leave now.”

“Arre, Arnav beta, come and have some tea with us.”

“No thank you uncle, I need to get home and get some work done.”

“Thanks for picking me up.”

Arnav nodded and then took his leave.

*****

“KHUSHI KHUSHI KHUSHI KHUSHI KHUSHI! I need to tell you something.”

“What is it Jiji!?”

“You know yours and Arnav’s party on Saturday, you’ll never guess who asked me to be their date.”

“Who asked you?”

“Akash did!”

“Akash as in Akash Singh Raizada?”

“Of course! Who else!”

“I didn’t realise that you guys were still on it.”

Payal playfully hit Khushi.

“I really love him Khush. And the since that reunion party, we’ve spent so much time together. He seems serious about us, he’s always talking about marriage.”

“Have you told Maasi and Mausaji?”

“I haven’t told them yet, I don’t know how to.”

“Well I think if you and Akash are serious, then you need to have that conversation about how you’re going to tell the families.”

Payal nodded, and Khushi could tell she was deep in thought.

Khushi waited for Payal to come out of her thoughts, but then Khushi’s phone buzzed.

*So excited for the party on Saturday and I’m so glad we’ll be able to share the night together.*

Khushi couldn’t help but smile at Arnav’s cuteness. She knew she had feelings for him and she knew that he had feelings for her, but they needed to make sure they did what was right for their businesses. Khushi didn’t want to let anything come between her and Khushiyan. But she knew she wanted Arnav too… How could she made this work without ruining everything she’d ever worked for?

Author’s note:

How are you guys doing? Hope you’re doing well and enjoyed the update! I feel like I haven’t left a message like this for a while. Let me know what you think is going to happen next!

Also I would like to take this moment to say that, it means a lot to me that you guys enjoy my work and that you’d like updates a lot more frequently, but I must press that, for me, updating once every 2 weeks even is hard. See a lot of the last couple of chapters I have had written since around March but since about April, I haven’t had time to write at all. I’m trying to spread out my updates like how I am currently doing so that you guys have a regular pattern and do go months without updates.

I hope you understand why I can’t update more frequently. But regardless, I hope you have enjoyed this chapter and I can ensure you the fun is yet to come! Finally, I have a couple of one shots in the works so keep your eye out for them!

~ One Year Later ~

A year had passed since Arnav and Khushi had signed contracts and had joined their businesses together and in that time the partnership was going well.

They had mainly focused on bringing Khushi’s business over to India and hadn’t really focused much on moving AR to the UK, but this was Arnav’s choice. He thought they would be able to do better if they focused on one business at a time. Despite this, there was some shift and people in the UK were becoming more aware of Arnav’s brand.

Over the year, Arnav and Khushi had both travelled between India and the U.K. They had talked with each other, each other’s business heads and with lawyers to make sure that everything was running smoothly.

They had attended conferences and all kinds of different business related meetings.

Now Khushi was almost ready to come back to India for good. She had purchased herself an apartment in Delhi. Her aunt and uncle had insisted that she could live with them, however Khushi liked having her space and she thought it would just be more convenient if she lived on her own.

*****

“What time does your flight come in?”

“Half 6 in the morning.

“I’ll come and pick you up?”

“There isn’t any need for that Arnav. I’ll just get a taxi.”

“No I insist, I’ll come and pick you up. Taxis at that time are quite hard to come by at the moment, even at the airport.”

Khushi thought about it and then agreed.

“Alright, as long as it isn’t too much trouble for you.”

“It isn’t, don’t worry.”

“Well thanks. I guess I’ll see you then.”

“Yeah. Text me when you’re on the plane and stuff and before you take off.”

“Arnav…”

“Anyway, I have to go now. Take care.”

“You too.”

Khushi ended the call and looked at her phone. Over the course of the year, Arnav and Khushi had gotten a lot closer. They weren’t just business partners, but they had become good friends as well. Arnav was attentive of her and took good care of her when she was in India. He made sure that she was used to how things were run, and whenever they met any business associates, he made sure to introduce her.

A couple of months ago however, they had had a moment. Khushi was in India and Arnav had taken her out to dinner to discuss something about another business who wanted to work with them. The dinner had run smoothly and it was when they had got back to Arnav’s car that the moment had taken place…

**Flashback**

“So you don’t think that working with this company would be a good idea?”

“I think right now we should focus on our own brands before we start taking anyone else under our wing.”

“You really are a level headed business woman aren’t you.”

Khushi blushed and ate the last bit of her dessert. They were both done and spoke a bit before the bill arrived. Arnav paid for the meal, even though Khushi had insisted that he let her pay, or to at least let her pay for her own food. But Arnav was a gentleman and said that he got this.

He paid and then they left and made their way over to the car. Arnav got to Khushi’s door before she did and he held it open for her. Khushi thanked Arnav and she
attempted to get into the car. However, as Arnav’s car was slightly high, she lost her footing due to her high heels and fell backwards. Khushi tried to regain balance but failed. She expected to feel the hard pavement on her butt, but she landed in Arnav’s strong arms.

“Are you okay.”

Khushi pulled herself out of Arnav’s arms slowly and straightened her dress out. She nodded and blushed a deep shade of red.

Arnav moved back into Khushi and closed the distance between them. Khushi’s back rested against the back door of the car. He closed the distance between them, and raised a hand and pushed Khushi’s hair away from her face. His hand moved away from her face and hair and he placed it on the side of her neck, and moved closer to her. Khushi’s eyes fluttered shut and Arnav took this as a sign that she was feeling the pull that he was.

They were moments apart and Arnav closed that distance. His lips brushed against Khushi’s. Khushi parted her lips ever so slightly and Arnav went in properly. He planted his lips onto her and kissed her. The kiss was light, but then Khushi moved into Arnav. He could feel every single one of her curves against him, her breasts were straining in her tight little dress and he could feel them brush his chest.

Khushi wrapped her arms around Arnav’s neck and Arnav placed his hands on her waist. He pushed her back against the car so her back was resting on the car, and he pressed himself against her. Khushi could feel the bulge in Arnav’s pants against her. They kissed passionately, like two people who had never kissed anyone else ever before. Arnav slipped his tongue between Khushi’s lips and she took his tongue and caressed it with her own. His hands moved away from her waist and onto her pert round ass. He placed his hands on her behind and pulled her closer to himself still. His squeezed her butt cheeks making her gasp and pulling him further into her.

Arnav broke the kiss to come up for air. Their eyes fluttered open momentarily, but both were still hazy from the passionate kiss they had just shared. They were still drunk on their passion for one another.

Arnav pulled the door of the backseat of the car open and pretty much pushed Khushi in before tumbling in after her himself. Khushi lay back on the seat and pulled Arnav by the tie on top of herself. Their lips locked and Khushi wrapped her legs around his waist. Her dress was short so when she did this, her dress rose up, exposing her panties. Arnav’s hands moved round her back and he unzipped her dressed and pulled it off her shoulders. He pulled it down over her breasts, which were barely covered by a lazy red bra.

Breaking the kiss, Arnav looked at Khushi’s chest. Wow. He could see her tight little nipples stood up through the bra and he took one of the little buds into his mouth, all the while letting his hand wonder south to rest on top of her panties. Khushi threw her head back in pleasure and laced her fingers into Arnav’s hair.

He began to pull her panties away with one hand when his phone began to ring.

Both Arnav and Khushi’s eyes snapped open and they just stared at each other for a moment. Arnav began to pull himself away from Khushi and he looked away as she pulled her panties back up, fixed her dress and pulled it down to cover herself.

Arnav cleared his throat.

“I…”

“This shouldn’t have happened.”

Arnav turned his head to Khushi and looked at her with inquisitive eyes.

“This shouldn’t have happened Arnav.”

“But…”

“No. No buts, no nothing. We are business partners, we can’t be doing things like this.”

“We’re consenting adults.”

“We are, but we can’t be mixing business with pleasure.”

“But surely if this is what we want, we can find a way to make sure we can both have business but at the same time we can have pleasure as well.”

Khushi shook her head.

“This can’t happen again. God only knows where this was heading.”

Arnav nodded. He respected her decision. Arnav sorted himself out and once they were both ready, he opened the door and got out of the car. He stood outside and Khushi could see he had a hard on. This made her blush because she was the cause of that, but at the same time, she knew something like this was wrong. He was her business partner, they couldn’t be doing things like this for it could have an impact on how they worked with each other.

Khushi’s business was her life, her everything and she wasn’t going to let a man get in between her and her life.

Arnav stood outside the car and looked down at himself. He kept replaying what had happened between himself and Khushi and this caused him to stay hard. How was he meant to drive them all the way home when he had those thoughts, those images of her in his head.

He shook his head and got into the drivers seat.

Khushi made sure she looked decent and slid out of the car and got into the passenger seat beside him. Arnav started the engine and they were off.

For a while, neither of them spoke, but kept replaying what had happened between them.

It was after a while Arnav finally spoke.

“May I say something?”

“Of course.”

“Khushi, I know its inappropriate, but I’m deadly attracted to you. I have been since the start. Everything about you, your ambition. The way you work…”

“I’m not going to deny it and say I’m not attracted to you, because I am. But if we want to make this business partnership work… We have to remain professional.”

**Flashback ends**

Admittedly it was more than just a moment, but that was the only time such an occurrence took place. Since then, they had maintained a respectable distance and they grown to become friends.

Khushi picked her mug up and took a sip of her tea. Was she ready to be around Arnav all the time? Could she manage to keep a distance without falling weak to the deadly attraction that she knew they both had for each other?

Jalebi ~ Part 5

IMG_8793

The lawyers had gotten together and they had spoken about the business proposals. All things were running smoothly, and Arnav and Khushi were moments away from having their first business partners.

“So if you both could just sign here and here…”

Arnav and Khushi took it in terms to sign all the paperwork.

“Congratulations, Mr Raizada and Miss Gupta, you both are now the successful owners of 2 businesses each.”

Arnav, Khushi and there lawyers celebrated with some champagne and they all discussed how both companies would now be able to reach new heights.

“I can’t wait to see what you can help me bring to AR, Khushi.”

“And I’m also curious to see what you can bring to Khushiyan.”

“I think we can make this partnership very successful.”

“I hope we can.”

The lawyers left and Arnav and Khushi continued to discuss what would be there next moves and how they were going to play things.

“Oh I almost forgot.”

Arnav opened the drawer of his desk and took out a box and handed it to Khushi.

“What is this?”

“Open it.”

Khushi opened the box and inside were a whole lot of jalebis.

“I thought you’d like them to celebrate with.”

“Thanks Arnav. I honestly haven’t had jalebis in the longest time ever!”

Khushi took one out of the box and popped a piece into her mouth.

“Mm this is so good! Would you like some?”

“I can’t, I’m diabetic.”

“You are? I didn’t know that!”

“Maybe you should have done some research on the man you were actually going into business with, not just his business.”

Khushi laughed at this and ate some more jalebi. Arnav looked at his watch and realised it was coming up to half 7.

“Should we start leaving? Our reservation at the restaurant is for half 8.”

“Yeah sure, let’s go.”

They both got out of their seats. Arnav held the door open for Khushi and she stepped out. They spoke about all the different things they could do now that their companies were joined and they made their way down to Arnav’s car. On the way down however, they bumped into Akash.

“Congratulations on your new business ventures! I’m so happy for the both of you.”

“Thanks Akash! Although this wouldn’t have happened unless you suggested it!”

“I only suggested what anyone else would have done. Bhai, are we going home now?”

“Didn’t I tell you, I’m taking Khushi out to dinner? We going to celebrate.”

“Oh no, you didn’t say.”

Akash raised his eyebrow at Arnav who dismissed the look.

“I’ll see you when I get home.”

Arnav placed his hand lightly on Khushi’s back and led her out of the building towards the car. Behind them, Akash was not impressed that Arnav was taking Khushi out. This wasn’t what he was expecting and it wasn’t something that needed to happen. They needed Khushi’s business, not her.

*****

“Here’s to new beginnings and hopefully a successful and fruitful future.”

Arnav and Khushi clinked their glasses over dinner. They both sipped their wine while they waited for their food to start arriving.

“This may sound like a dumb question, but what happens now?”

“Well I’m going back to England next week. I need to get back because I’ve been here way longer than I initially came for. I guess I’ll go over and start talking to my team over there about who wants to come over here with me to help me start up over here. And then I guess I would need to find someone who would be able to oversee things over there while I’m here.”

“So you’ve got a lot of stuff to do.”

“Loads!”

“How long do you think you’re going to be in the UK for?”

“I don’t know…”

“When do you plan on leaving.”

“There’s a flight out next Wednesday that I can get a ticket for.”

Arnav nodded and looked down at the starters that had been put down in front of them.
He had known Khushi would need to go back, but somehow he’d kind of forgotten about that and had assumed he’d have her around all the time now, especially now that they would be working together.

Khushi started tucking into her food while Arnav watched her in deep thought.

“Would you come back to India again soon?”

“I mean I would need to, but I would want to get the bulk of my work sorted first before I came back.”

“And once you had everything sorted, you’d live here permanently?”

“I feel I’d still go back to England because that is where my home is now and I have lots of friends there, but yes, I guess I wouldn’t spend most of the year here.”

Arnav nodded and went back to his food. What was happening to him? This was all meant to be a means to make ends meet, a way to help his business, but why was he starting to feel as though he didn’t want Khushi to go. Why did he want her here so much?

*****

“Dinner was lovely.”

“Yeah it was…”

“Will I see you again before you leave for England?”

“I don’t know.”

At this point, both felt slightly awkward and looked away. Arnav ran his hand through his hair and unlocked his car.

“Should we go?”

“Yeah…”

Once in the car, they spoke about all the things they could achieve now that their businesses were working together.

They reached Payal’s house and Arnav parked the car.

“I’ll speak to you soon.”

“Yeah, sure.”

There was another awkward silence as Khushi got out of the car.

“Thanks for dinner.”

“It was my pleasure.”

Khushi shut the car and Arnav watched her walk up to the house. Why was he feeling so awkward and so unsure. Khushi was his business partner, that was it.

He shook his head and drove away. She was leaving, and this was his time to get over these weird feelings he was having.

*****

“What was the need to take her to dinner bhai!?”

“She’s my business partner, it’s just common courtesy to celebrate with some dinner.”

“This is all way to meet our end goal. You don’t need to overdo it.”

“Akash… I don’t understand why you’re being like this.”

“You’re interested in her! It’s so obvious!”

“No I’m not!”

“Yes you are! I swear if you start developing feelings for her and give up on the plan…”

“I won’t!”

“You better not!”

Akash left Arnav’s room and ran his fingers through his hair. None of this was making sense to him. What did Akash want? Why was he acting in this manner? And what the hell was going on in his head regarding Khushi? Why was it that he suddenly didn’t want to be apart from her?

Jalebi ~ Part 4

IMG_8793

A few days had passed since the reunion party and Akash’s proposal for Khushi to go into business with Arnav. She was still very confused, but had done her research on AR designs. She had checked all their figures, all their details and it seemed like a good idea. But still she wanted to meet with Arnav.

Khushi took out her phone from her pocket and scrolled with find Arnav’s name.

*Hi Arnav, it’s Khushi. I’ve been thinking about the proposal and I would like to meet with you to discuss it further.*

Within moments, she got a reply from Arnav.

*I was wondering when I wouldn’t hear from you.*

*when are you free?*

*I can do today @5? Are you free then?*

*Yes I am, where would you like to meet?*

*My office?*

*Okay, I’ll see you then.*

So it was decided. She would meet Arnav at 5 at his office.

Khushi got off the chair and went over to her suitcase, which she hadn’t bothered to unpack, and pulled out her most business formal outfit she had. It was a full length black dress. She found a pair of white heels she would wear with them and then also found a white blazer.
She had a couple of hours, but decided that she would start getting dressed. The whole idea was making her nervous, but it did sound like a good idea and it could really help with her business exposure.

*****

“She’s doing to meet me today Akash.”

“Did you reach out to her or did she reach out to you?”

“She messaged me.”

“That means she’s interested! Bhai, we have to make sure we play our cards right.”

“Akash, you maybe the mastermind behind this, but don’t forget, this is my business and we’re going to do things on my terms.”

Akash nodded and smiled. He left Arnav’s room.
Arnav sat there and thought for a while. He liked the idea of going into partnership with Khushi. But he wasn’t sure about Akash’s plan of trying to take her business from her completely. It didn’t feel right. She’s worked just as hard as he’d done, and to take that away from her?

Arnav understood what Akash was saying, and he didn’t necessarily agree, but Akash didn’t need to know that. This was Arnav’s job and he would do it on his terms.

*****

“Mr Raizada, Miss Gupta has arrived.”

“Send her up Aman.”

Arnav sat back in his seat and straightened out the files he had infront of her.
He could hear Khushi’s heels before he saw her. And then he saw her through his glass windows. She looked amazing. Her hair was tied back in a ponytail and her make up was simple. Her outfit brought out the best of her body and he was in awe.

Arnav straightened his suit and sat up. There was a knock at the door.

“Come in.”

Khushi walked in and smiled. Arnav got to his feet.

“Hey.”

“Hi.”

Arnav walked round his desk and over to Khushi. He shook her hand, pulled her chair out and let her sit before he went back over and sat down himself.

“How are you?”

“I’m good, you?”

“I’ve been well. How have you been enjoying your time here so far?”

“It’s been good, haven’t had much time to do anything yet.”

“I can imagine. Can I interest you in anything to drink.”

“No I’m fine thank you.”

They made small talk for a while before they finally got down to what they were here for.

“So Khushi, what have you thought about our proposal?”

“I accept your proposal, but there are obviously a number of details we need to go through before we can sign anything.”

“I’m glad that you have accepted and I did think there would be a number of things you’d like to go through. I have drawn up a draft of a contact with details of what I am proposing.”

Arnav handed a file to Khushi and she began to flip through it.

Khushi pulled a file out of her bag and handed it to Arnav. I have done the same. This is what I have proposed that I want from you’re business, of course the terms are up for negotiation.
Arnav nodded and opened the file he’d been handed.

Both Arnav and Khushi sat with a pencil and annotated the clauses in the proposals they had infront of them.
Arnav looked up from his and looked at Khushi. Her eyes were down and her hand was moving across the page as she made notes for discussion. Arnav couldn’t help but stare at her long lashes casting a shadow on her rosy cheeks. Her hair shined ever so slightly in the light.

Minutes passed and Arnav finally looked away when Khushi began to look up.

“Are you ready to discuss?”

“Yes I am.”

*****

After over an hour of negotiation, clauses were changed and different issues has been addressed. Arnav and Khushi came to an agreement that Khushi would have a 65% share of Khushi and Arnav would have 35. And Arnav would hold 65% of AR while Khushi would get 35%.
Other factors too were discussed and would be finalised with their lawyers.

“So we’ll get all these documents prepared and we’ll both speak to our lawyers and then we’ll meet again to finalise everything and sign contracts?”

“Yes, that sounds like a plan.”

Khushi got to her feet, as did Arnav.

“I’m glad we were able to come to an agreement.”

“Me too.”

“If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me.”

“I won’t.”

“Erm Khushi, d’you think, maybe I can take you out for a drink or something to celebrate?”

“We don’t really have anything to celebrate just yet.”

“Alright fine, how about once we get all this stuff finalised?”

“Yeah sure. Why not. Although I don’t really drink.”

“That’s fine, dinner then?”

“You’re on.”

Arnav and Khushi both smiled at one another and then Khushi took her leave. Once he was alone in his office, he called Akash up.

Akash came running in no time.

“So?”

Arnav handed the file over to Akash who flipped through it.

“She’s only giving you 35%?”

“She had initially proposed 25%.”

“And you couldn’t get her to go higher?”

“Akash…”

“Alright alright. But not bad bhai, we can do this.”

Arnav nodded in agreement. But something just didn’t feel right. Why was Akash so hellbent on taking Khushi’s business from her? Arnav couldn’t help but think Akash had some ulterior motive, but surely his brother wouldn’t do anything too underhand?

Jalebi ~ Part 3

IMG_8793

Arnav and Khushi sat at the bar and they sipped on their drinks, talking about their businesses and their future plans.

“I really think you should think about expanding into India.”

“I’m not sure. I mean I can’t run the business from England.”

“I think you could.”

“You have so much faith in me.”

“I’ve seen your sales figures, I’ve seen your growth, and as someone who understands the business we’re in, I think there is enough evidence to suggest you can do it.”

Khushi tilted her head to the side and just observed Arnav. This was insane. From being someone who barely acknowledged her existence, he had suddenly become a cheerleader for her business.

Akash and Payal came over and sat down with Arnav and Khushi.

“How’s it going guys?”

“Akash don’t you agree that Khushi should expand her business into India.”

“Sure she should!”

“But Akash, I really don’t think I’d be able to manage both in India and in England.”

Payal spoke up at this point. “Well you were planning on moving back to India any way and running the business from here.”
“I know, but that way my focus would still have been on what’s going on in England. If I were to branch out into India, I’d get more invested with what’s going on here.”

A thought hit Akash.

“Khushi, have you ever considered having a business partner?”

“I have…”

“Then I have a proposition for you. How about you go into partnership with bhai?!”

Arnav and Khushi both looked at Akash like someone had hit them around the head.

“What?”

“Hear me out. If you went into partnership with bhai, your brand would be linked with his and he would also be able to handle the Indian side of your business. That way, your business would get more exposure here but at the same time you would still be able to focus on what’s going on in England.”

Arnav thought about this and he realised this could be a really good idea.

“And Khushi could expose my brand in England. It could be a win win for both of us.”

Khushi thought about this.

“Obviously you don’t have to say anything now. But I feel this would benefit both of you.”

“I don’t know… I mean no offence to you Arnav, but I don’t know you personally. I don’t know how I feel about signing half of my business, which I have worked so hard for, over to you.”

“Then don’t sign over half. Hey listen, let’s not discuss this any more and we have meet again soon to have a look at the situation again.”

Khushi nodded, this seemed like a good idea. The group sat around for a while longer and then the girls decided that they should take a leave.
Akash gave Payal a quick hug and Arnav handed his number over to Khushi.

“Be in touch.”

“I will do.”

*****

“So where are you staying?”

“I have a hotel room booked.”

“You’re going to stay at a hotel?”

“Yes, that’s the plan.”

“No way Khushi! You have to come home with me!”

“No I couldn’t…”

“Please Khushi! Mama and papa would love to see you again! We haven’t seen you in years.”

Khushi looked at her cousin. She loved Payal with all her heart. Khushi’s parents had always lived in England, whereas Payal’s family had never left India. However, Khushi’s parents hadn’t wanted her to grow up in London, so she had lived with Payal’s family. Although her aunt and her uncle were welcoming, they weren’t exactly the biggest fans of the way Khushi’s parents had chosen to spend their lives. They hadn’t approved that they live in England while their daughter was in India. But regardless they had kept Khushi and treated her as their own.

“Alright. I’ll come, but only for tonight!”

*****

“Amma, Babuji, I’m back and look who I’ve got with me!”

“Payal! They’re probably sleeping! Have you seen the time?”

No sooner had Khushi finished her sentence, Garima came rushing out of the living room. She stopped in her tracks when she saw Khushi and her eyes welled with tears.

“Khushi!? My goodness, my child.”

Garima came rushing forward and called Shashi to come too. She took Khushi into a strong arms as her eyes leaked with the tears she could no longer hold back.
Garima pulled back and cupped Khushi’s face.

“My child! You’re home!”

“She was planning on staying at a hotel amma.”

“How could you even think like that Khushi!”

Khushi looked away awkwardly as Shashi came rushing forward.

“Arre, Khushi? You didn’t tell us you were coming?”

“It was a last minute plan Mausaji, I wasn’t sure I was coming back to India at all.”

“It’s so good to see you.”

Garima led Khushi into the living room where the little family spoke for hours. They asked about Khushi’s parents, about her job, about her life in general.

“How long do you plan to stay in India.”

“I’ve only come for about a week to be honest. I have to be back soon for work and stuff.”

“Well it’s settled, you’re staying with us.”

“Honestly Maasi, its fine, I have a hotel booked and everything.”

“There is no way we are letting you stay in a hotel and that’s final.”

Khushi tried to get her point across, but her aunt and uncle weren’t having it. So she gave in and decided she would have to stay with them while she was here. It was nearing 1am and everyone was tired so Payal said they should all get to bed.

“Khushi, stay in my room with me?”

“Are you sure, I can stay in the guest room.”

“No please, stay with me Khushi, I’ve missed you so much.”

Khushi nodded and allowed Payal to take her things through into her room.
Both went and got ready for bed.

“So tell me now, what were you and Arnav talking about?”

“Not much to be honest, just business and what we’ve been doing since high school.”

“Have you thought about what Akash suggested?”

“About going into partnership with Arnav? I have been thinking about it, but I don’t know if it’s a good idea.”

“I think you should consider it at least.”

“Hmm. Enough about me, what about you and Akash?”

Payal blushed.

“What about us?”

“Do you still want to balleh balleh with him?”

Payal hit Khushi with her pillow, who fell back laughing.

“Really Khushi, balleh balleh?”

“Well do you?”

“I never stopped thinking about him. And seeing him today and realising that he never stopped thinking about me either makes me realise that perhaps it was meant to be between us.”

“Do you have any plans to see him again?”

“Maybe…”

Khushi winked at Payal and in return got hit with the pillow again before falling back with laughter.

*****

“What are you thinking about bhai?”

“I’m thinking my cousin really is smart.”

“So you liked what I pulled out of the bag?”

“You’re planning is amazing.”

Arnav and Akash were back at home at were sitting at the bar in their house.

“How did you find out about Khushi and her business?”

“I saw her in a magazine and then did some research.”

“Do you think she’s going to accept your proposal?”

“Bhai, you are going to make sure she does.”

“I don’t know Akash, I know we said we needed to do something to help boost AR, but…”

“Bhai, come on now. This is what all business people have to do if they want to make it.”

“But stealing her business?”

“Sh. Bhai. It isn’t stealing her business if she hands it over to you.”

“I don’t know Akash…”

Arnav sipped the last of his drink deep in thought. If they were to do this, it would take a lot of convincing because it didn’t seem like Khushi would just hand over half her business, but if the played the game right then…

“Let’s do it Akash.”

Akash poured then both another drink and then raised his glass.

“Here’s to taking Khushiyan and becoming an unstoppable fashion house…”

Arnav clinked his glass with Akash and they both drank in silence. The real game was about to begin…

Jalebi ~ Part 2

~Five Years Later~

“Hey Arnav!”

“Wow hi Lavanya! How are you?”

“I’m good! It’s so good to see you again!”

“I know! Can you believe we haven’t seen each other in about four years!”

Arnav greeted Lavanya in the loud crowded hall. They were surrounded by all their classmates from high school. It was exactly five years ago that they have graduated from high school, and now they were all back together for a reunion. Many people had gotten married in the time that had passed, some even had children. However, Arnav Singh Raizada was still very much single and was one of the most desired men in India. Once he’d left high school he’d gone off to Harvard to study business where he got his degree from and then carried on and got his Masters from. Then he’d come back to India about half a year ago where he started up AR Designs.

“How have you been?”

“I’ve been well! How about you? How’s your husband?”

“Oh haven’t you heard, we’re getting a divorce.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.”

“Don’t be! I couldn’t deal with him any longer.”

“Oh well in that case I’m glad you’re happier now.”

“What about you? Great ASR still single?”

“You know how it is, I just haven’t met the one yet.”

Lavanya laughed and was about to say something else when someone distracted her. She excused herself from Arnav and went over to speak to someone else. Akash walked over to Arnav.

“She coming! She said she’s 5 minutes away! Bhai can you believe I’m going to see her again!”

“I still can’t believe you haven’t seen her in the last 5 years. What kind of couple were you two. She moved away and you never even tried to see her again.”

“We have our reasons! You wouldn’t understand.”

“Nope, I definitely wouldn’t.”

Akash straightened his tie and took a sip of wine. Arnav shook his head and laughed. His cousin was always so hopeless when it came to women.
A tall slender woman walked into the room, wearing a pale blue sari. Akash nudged Arnav.

“Bhai, it’s her!”

Akash passed his drink back to Arnav and walked over to Payal and he greeted her.

“Payal! You look… You look stunning!”

“Thank you! You look really nice too.”

Arnav rolled his eyes and walked over to the pair. He’d never had an issue with Payal, she was a nice girl after all, but he couldn’t understand what was so special about her that his cousin was never able to get over her. She was certainly easy on the eyes, and he knew she was smart, but she just didn’t have that wow factor. But each to their own. If Akash wanted to be with her, then who cares what Arnav thought.

“Hi Arnav!”

“Hey, how are you.”

“I’m well, you?”

“I’ve been good.”

“Congratulations on launching AR Designs, I’ve been reading all about it.”

“Thank you. It’s a work in progress but we’re getting there.”

“India’s third largest fashion house in less than a year of being established. I think you’re doing more than well.”

Arnav felt himself go a little bit shy. Yes, his company was doing a lot better than he’d expected it to. Especially considering how small it was compared to other fashion houses. But he couldn’t complain, his hard work was paying off and he was ready to rock the world.
Lavanya came back over to Arnav who stopped dead in her tracks when she saw Payal.

“Wait, I remember you! Payal Gupta right.”

“Yeah.”

“Your sari! It’s a Khushiyan one!”

“Yes it is.”

“How did you get your hands on one?! They don’t ship to India!”

“My cousin…”

It was just then when the door behind them opened and another woman walked in. She was wearing a sheer black sari with a simple diamond necklace and bracelet. She had 6 inch heels on and her long dark hair cascaded down her back.

“Damn who is that?”

Arnav’s attention turned to the woman who just walked in and he couldn’t help but stare. She really was gorgeous. Many heads turned as she walked into the room and over to Akash and Payal who had moved forward to meet her.

“You made it!”

“You sent me a personal request Akash, how could I not come?”

Lavanya and Arnav watched on as Payal hugged her newcomer.

“ASR, who is that?”

“I honestly don’t know.”

“She gorgeous.”

“She wasn’t on any of the sporting teams and I’m sure she wasn’t a cheerleader.”

“No she wasn’t a cheerleader, I’d remember if she was.”

“Who is she?”

Akash, Payal and the newcomer came back and joined Arnav and Lavanya. Lavanya’s jaw dropped once more.

“Your sari is a Khushiyan one too. Where have you guys got these saris from? I’ve been looking at them in all the fashion magazines and I’ve been dying to get my hands on one.”

Akash smirked.

“Lavanya, Bhai, allow me to introduce you to Khushi Kumari Gupta, owner of Khushiyan Designs.”

“Wait. You own Khushiyan.”

Khushi blushed but she nodded all the same. Arnav looked at her. There was something about this girl that seemed ever so familiar but he just couldn’t put his thumb on it.

“And you were in our graduating class?”

“I left a couple of weeks before graduation, but yes. We were in the same class throughout high school.”

And that’s when Arnav realised who she was.

“Jalebi!” Arnav shouted out as he realised who she was. Khushi looked to Arnav, her expression falling slightly. “You’re Jalebi?”

“Yeah, I am.”

Khushi turned away, not entirely happy that Jalebi had come back to haunt her. Khushi hadn’t minded being known as Jalebi, but once she had gone to university, she wanted people to know her as Khushi, to appreciate who she really was. She had worked her butt off to get her degree and then it had taken her a whole lot of work and effort to get her business started. Regardless, she had managed it, and less than 2 years on, Khushiyan Designs was headlining in a lot of fashion magazines, and not just the Indian ones.

Akash excused himself and Payal as he led her over to the snacks table. Lavanya too walked away, going over to talk to an old friend, leaving Arnav and Khushi on their own.

“So, what did you do after high school?”

“I went to Oxford to get my degree, you?”

“I went Harvard.”

“Oh that’s cool, what did you study?”

“Business. You?”

“Same.”

“I guess we weren’t that different then?”

“To some extent. You were the king of jocks, the guy everyone wanted to be with and I was just boring little Jalebi with the oily hair.”

“Well I must say, the oil has benefited your hair, it looks really amazing, as does the rest of you.”

Khushi blushed and thanked Arnav.

“So Khushiyan, it’s all yours?”

“Yeah.”

“You’ve done really well with it, I’ve read all kinds of articles about it.”

“Thanks. AR has done pretty amazingly too.”

“Have you thought about bringing Khushiyan over to India?”

“I have… But I don’t know if it’ll be successful here.”

“I think it would. I mean, you saw how Lavanya reacted. There are plenty of people who feel the same way.”

“Do you really think so?”

“Yeah I really do.”

“Should you be saying that? Considering that if I did bring my business it would be a competitor of yours?”

“It would be nice to have some real competition.”

“You don’t produce any Asian clothes like me though?”

“I guess that’s where our businesses are different. I’m selling western to the eastern community and you’re selling eastern to the western.”

Arnav and Khushi continued to speak about their businesses.

“Hey d’you want a drink?”

“Sure.”

Arnav led Khushi over to the bar where he picked up a glass of wine for the both of them.

Akash and Payal watched from a distance.

“You were right Payal, those two really have hit it off.”

Jalebi ~ Part 1

IMG_8793

“Hey guys look, Jalebi just walked into the room.

Everyone turned to look at the girl who’d walked into the canteen. She was wearing a simple pink selwar kameez, and she had her hair plaited down her back.

“God she’s such a weirdo, who puts that much oil in their hair.”

“And who eats so many jalebis?”

The group of teenagers sniggered. Akash Singh Raizada shook his head.

“You guys, why don’t you just leave her alone.”

“Ak we know you’re trying to get it on with her cousin, but that didn’t mean you have to be so defensive of Jalebi as well. We have nothing against Payal.”

“I know, it’s just rude, just leave her alone.”

The group looked away, you couldn’t argue with Akash. Everyone went back to their own world and forget all about ‘Jalebi.’ Akash got off the table and left the canteen and made his way down to the library to find Payal.
Payal Gupta was busy putting her books back on the shelf when Akash wrapped his arms around her.

“Akash…”

“I can’t believe you’re leaving today.”

“I know, this day has come so soon.”

“Are you sure you can’t stay until graduation? It’s only 5 weeks away now?”

“I want to, you know I do, but Babuji’s boss wants him to start as soon as possible. We can’t stay any longer.”

“Why does this have to happen? Why do you have to leave me just as we get together.”

Payal placed a gentle kiss on Akash’s lips.

“We were going to be parting ways to go to university any way.”

“I know, but… I wanted to take you to prom! Lucknow is so far away, I feel selfish to ask you to come back for prom.”

Payal chuckled and held onto Akash’s hand.

“This isn’t the end of us Akash. If we were meant to be, we’ll find our ways back to each other again soon.”

“Soon won’t be soon enough.”

Akash pulled Payal into him. He was a big boy, strong and he had the power over people. Yet with Payal he felt like a child. He needed her with him. How could he let her go. He felt tears gathering in his eyes as they kissed for the last time.

*****

“Watch it Jalebi!”

“Sorry… I didn’t…”

“No you didn’t see. Jheez when do you ever look where you’re going. Whenever I see you, you’re always picking books up off the floor.”

Jalebi bent down to pick her books up. She looked up to find ‘him’ watching her. He was Arnav, Arnav Singh Raizada. Captain of the football team, captain of the cricket team and all round perfect jock. He was also the cousin of Akash, yet other than their initials, they didn’t have anything in common. If Arnav was an all round jock, Akash was an all round academic. Arnav was captain of every sport team of the school, whereas Akash was student body president. Akash was kind and easy going, whereas Arnav was as subtle as a bulldozer and the most arrogant person you could ever meet.

Jalebi picked up her books and was ready to leave when Arnav called her back.

“Hey, you and Payal are leaving today aren’t you?”

“Yes we are.”

“That sucks. I mean Akash’s really cut about about Payal leaving.”

“She’s not exactly thrilled herself.”

“We’ve never really got on have we?”

“I didn’t even know you knew my name.”

“I… I don’t.”

Arnav couldn’t help feel a little bit uncomfortable at this point. Now that he actually thought about it, he really didn’t know her name. Everyone had called her Jalebi ever since they’d started high school, and it had stuck.

“I’m Khushi.”

“Khushi.”

“Yes Khushi.”

“Well I guess it’s been cool knowing you.”

Khushi couldn’t help but feel a little bit angry. Cool knowing you? What was he saying? He didn’t know a think about her, heck, he didn’t even know her name. But regardless, she didn’t say anything, what was the point. Khushi simply smiled, made sure she had all her things and walked away. Thank god she never had to deal with these jerks ever again…
