Scars ~ Part 21

The next morning, Khushi woke up before Arnav and she looked to Arnav. She smiled and looked at her hand. They’d gone to sleep cuddling, but they must have pulled apart during the night, but he was still holding her hand. He kept his promise, he didn’t let her go. Khushi smiled and get her cheeks blush.

“He’s so beautiful.”

And that’s when Khushi noticed it. He was shirtless. When did this happen? They’d gone to sleep and he had a shirt on and now he didn’t. Khushi’s eyes widened and she checked under the covers and saw all her clothes were just as they had been last night, so nothing like that happened.

“I felt hot, so I took my t-shirt off.”

“When did you wake up.”

“When you started moving the covers.”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you.”

“It’s alright.”

Khushi got out of bed and went into the bathroom and Arnav smiled.

I will make your marriage official and I will let the world know you’re my wife. So everyone who ever made you feel like crap and eat their words. You’re educated, beautiful and you’re the wife of the great ASR. Arnav smiled and fell back into bed and then his smile slowly slid away. Maya…

*****

“Good morning Khushi! Did you sleep well?”

“I slept great Di, you?”

“Yes I slept well too. But the stress of this paperwork.”

“Would you like some help?”

“I may need your help a little later, but right now I just need to go through all these application forms.”

“What are they for?”

“They’re for the new head care worker job.”

“At the orphanage?”

“Yes, Mrs Chadda resigned all of a sudden a couple of weeks ago and I’ve had temporary people in for a quite a while.”

“Mrs Chadda resigned?”

“Yes, all of a sudden as well. She’d been doing the job for years so I don’t understand what happened and she won’t say much. She just says she’s realised she didn’t care for the children as well as she would have done and due to that she feels as though the best thing for her to do is step down.”

At that point Arnav came down and overheard the conversation, he smiled to himself.

“Khushi, you were there for a long time, what did you think of Mrs Chadda?”

“Di… I… I need to get Arnavji’s food ready.”

“His foods ready, please sit and help me, tell me what she was like, I always thought she was a pleasant person.”

At this point Khushi sat down at the table and Arnav came and sat beside her.

“I don’t really know what to say Di.”

“How was she like with you?”

Khushi’s eyes filled with tears and Arnav put his hand in hers.

“Khushi… It’s okay, if you don’t want to talk about it Di will understand.”

Khushi wiped her eyes and she started telling Anjali her story.

“Mrs Chadda was… She was very dominating and she was an authoritarian. Everything had to be done her way. Whatever she said to the matrons they did.

She… She particularly disliked me. I honestly don’t know why Di, but right from the start, it seemed as though she hated me. There were others who she was quite rude towards but I felt like she targeted me. Whenever I got a bad report card, she’d beat me, if I got home from school a little late, even if it was only a matter of a couple of minutes, she wouldn’t let me have dinner. I waited turn 16 and so I could leave, but then of course I realised I had no where to go. No one would give me a job and I couldn’t afford anything. And so I asked Mrs Chadda for a job at the orphanage. That way, I would have a place to stay, I would get food and I’d also have some money coming in.”

“But I was told that you worked for free, that you were doing it for the experience?”

“Mrs Chadda said that she wouldn’t pay me and that I owned her this in return for all the years that she cared for me.”

This is where Arnav intervened.

“Di would did you have such a woman in charge?”

“When I took charge, Mrs Chadda had already been working there for years, the previous owner had said that she was really good and that she was great with the kids. The staff all told me there would be no reason to ever have to worry about replacing her and none of the kids I spoke to ever said anything against her.”

Payal had been listening from the kitchen and now joined the group around the table. How much more did Khushi have to suffer? Payal placed her hands on Khushi’s shoulders and gave them a squeeze.

Khushi wiped her tears and went into the kitchen and Payal followed her.

“Khushi, do you want to go shopping with me after you get home from college? It’s been a while since we last spent time together.”

“Okay…”

“And Papa said to tell you he’d like it if you went round one day.”

“I… Jiji, I really can’t Maasi…”

“Forget about mom. Dad and Buaji really want to see you, they really miss you Khushi.”

“Maybe one day, just not yet.”

“Okay, whenever you’re ready.”

Khushi ate her breakfast and then rushed off to college. It was the only day when she didn’t have a photography lesson and so she was in college all day. When she got there, Lavanya and Amrita informed her that all their lessons for the day had been cancelled.

“So Khushi, me, you and La are going to the cinema today!”

“Cinema?”

“Yes!”

“What about the boys?”

“Raj and Tom are having a boys day out, they rarely spend time together any more and we don’t see much of you because you’re always so busy. So come on.”

Khushi smiled and the three friends went off into town. On there way to the cinema Khushi bumped into Shashi. She told her friends to go on ahead without here.

“Khushi beta? You here at this time?”

“My classes have been canceled and so me and my friends have come to see a film.”

“How have you been?”

“I’ve been good, you Mausaji?”

“I’ve missed you my dear, I was telling Payal only the other day she should bring you round one day.”

“I’ve been busy with work and college and then with everything at home. Hows everyone at home?”

“They’re all good my dead, all good. Jiji misses you.”

“I will call Buaji and speak to her. Mausaji, I really have to go now, my friends are waiting for me.”

Khushi took her leave and Shashi watched her go. If only his wife stopped being so stubborn, everything would be so different.

Khushi joined her friends and they watched a film together. When the film ended, Amrita suggested shopping.

“Let me call my sister. She wanted us to go shopping so I’ll just let her know I’m already here. You guys don’t mind her joining us, do you?”

“Of course not.”

Khushi called Payal and explained how she was already in town and Payal said she’d be there shortly.

The girls went and had a coffee and that’s when Payal joined. Khushi introduced her friends to Payal and that’s when Lavanya gasped.

“Khushi, you never told us your cousin was the wife of Akash Singh Raizada!”

“How do you know Jiju?”

“Why wouldn’t we know your Jiju? He’s the cousin and right hand man of the great Arnav Singh Raizada. Payal ji, can I just say I loved the issue of India’s Hottest when you and Akash were on the cover!”

“Please, just call me Payal.”

“Jiji? You never told me you were on a magazine cover!?”

“I think I have have that issue Khushi, I’ll find it for you. Yeah it was great, I loved your interview.”

“Why thank you ladies.”

They all spoke for a little while and then hit the shops. Some time passed and then La had to leave because she needed to go somewhere and so Amrita left with her.

“It was nice meeting you Payal and Khushi, watch what we do to you when we get to college next time. You never told us you LIVED with ASR!”

Khushi’s friends left.

“Jiji, they weren’t meant to know about me and Arnav ji.”

“They don’t. They just think you’re my sister and I wanted you to come and live with me because it was easier for everyone. People are allowed to know you live with us, they just can’t know about you and Bhai. Khushi has he said anything about making the official statement about you guys?”

Khushi shook her head sadly and Payal sighed.

“Hang in there Khushi, it’ll all be okay, I promise you.”

“I think it will Jiji, I think it will…”

Scars ~ Part 20

Weeks had passed and Arnav didn’t have any more ideas as to what he could do for Khushi. He’d watched how Raj and Khushi worked together and it was clear, Raj truly did care about Khushi, but Khushi just wasn’t interested.

The tension between Arnav and Khushi had started to diffuse and she was more willing to speak to him again, but Arnav was worried if he tried asking her anything, she wouldn’t say what he wanted to hear.

It was late one night when Arnav had an idea. One which he hoped would help to bring Khushi out of her shell. She was still downstairs helping with the tidying up after dinner and so Arnav took this time to dig out his old high school photo album and began to look through it. It was then that Khushi walked in.

“You done for the night?”

Khushi nodded and took her night cloths and went into the bathroom. Arnav sat on the side of the bed. Khushi came out and looked at him.

“Oh are you going to sleep in the bed today?”

“What? Oh no, I was just looking through this album of mine, would you like to see the pictures too?”

Khushi thought for a moment and then nodded and sat down beside him.

“Are these from when you were little.”

“No they’re pictures from when I was in high school.”

Arnav could feel Khushi get a little more uneasy and he could feel her body tense up, but he acted as though he didn’t notice. He started flicking through the album and pointed different things out to Khushi, who got more and more tense as time went on.

“And that’s a picture when I left high school. Do you have any pictures from when you were at school.”

“No.”

“Oh, but you must have many memories, you have to share some with me.”

“Do I?”

“Well I’d like to know.”

“I hated high school, so I’d rather not speak about it.”

“You hated it? Why?”

Khushi stood up and looked away.

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Please tell me Khushi. I really do want to get to know more about you and I want to help you forget all bad memories and help you start afresh.”

Khushi turned around and sat back down.

“Please don’t judge me.”

“I won’t, I promise you.”

Khushi sighed, took a deep breath and then she started telling her story.

“When I was at primary school everything was great, even when I started high school things were okay, but then when I was about 14 it all started. Older girls from the sixth form started saying things about me. One of them had seen me go back to the orphanage one day and she told all her friends.  The next morning they were all waiting for me on the playing field. They teased me about the fact I didn’t have parents and the fact that none of my relative wanted me. It didn’t help that I was a geek with glasses, that just added to the things they could say. There was this one girl though… She  was the worst. I can’t remember her name now, but she would always pick on me, pull my hair, there was even a time she broke my glasses.”

“Did you tell anyone?”

“I didn’t have anyone to tell. When all this started happening, all my friends stopped being my friends because they were worried they’d get bullied too and I couldn’t tell the teachers because they wouldn’t believe me.”

“Why wouldn’t they?”

“Because these girls were in the sixth form, about to leave for university, they were the ones who never got caught doing anything bad, they were meant to be our role models.”

“But if they were soon to leave, when they left didn’t it all just end.”

“No, because teasing little orphaned Khushi was something that got passed on. When the first lot left, the next set of senior years did the same thing. I became the entire schools target.”

“But surely as time went on it would have gotten better?”

“It really didn’t Arnavji, it really didn’t. When I was 15 it peaked, reached it’s all time worst.”

Khushi looked at her hands and Arnav could see her tears come down fast. He put an arm around her, to comfort her, show her that he was there for her. He wanted her to know that he wanted to protect her now.

“Khushi, I know this is hard for you, but please, tell me, it helps to shares things.”

“For a while, things died down and then one day I was on my way home when a group of seniors were following me. I didn’t know what to do. I mean I could run but they would be faster than me. I acted as though I hadn’t noticed them and tried to speed up. I was then walking through an alley way when one of the guys grabbed me and pushed me into the wall…”

Khushi stopped and Arnav felt a lump in his own throat.

“Boys… Boys bullied you as well?”

Khushi nodded and she started crying.

“I was only 15 at the time… I was so scared when he grabbed me. I’d heard about what boys did to lone girls in dark alley ways and the one we were in was really dark. All the other boys and girls just stood there watching him and they… They laughed Arnavji. They just stood there laughing at me.”

Arnav didn’t realise when, but his hold on Khushi tightened and he felt the anger bubbling away inside him.

“Did he… Did he do anything to you?”

Khushi’s eyes filled with fright and she hid her face in her hands.

“He touched me. My face, my hands, my body, my… My breasts. I told him to get off me, I looked to the other girls and pleaded and they all just laughed at me. I was so scared, I didn’t know what was going to happen. I tried to push him off me, I really did Arnavji, but I just couldn’t. And that was when he stopped and moved off me, but he didn’t let me go. He told me that I should get used to being treated like that, get used to being touched like that. He said that girls like me all ended up as either sex slaves or as prostitutes because they couldn’t get an education, or did they have anywhere to go and so they have no other option. He let me go and told me that if he ever saw me again, he’d finish what he started…”

At this point Khushi broke down completely and Arnav didn’t know what to do. He took Khushi into his arms and hugged her. He stroked her back, trying to comfort her. Khushi pulled away from him a few moments later.

“After that, I stayed away from school for a while, but I had to go back at some point. I kept a low profile, only attending my lessons. I didn’t even go out for lunch. After that day it really did die down. Once I got to the end of year 11, so I was 16 at the time, i withdrew myself and I didn’t go back the next year. I couldn’t risk going through all that again.”

“Khushi… God dammit Khushi, you went through all of that on your own?”

Khushi nodded sadly. Arnav took her hands in his.

“Let me tell you one thing now, what those scumbags did to you is unacceptable and one day they will get their comeuppance. What that ba***rd said to you about ‘girls like you’ isn’t true. Heck, you’re one of the smartest girls I’ve ever met, the grades you left school with are amazing. The ones that made your life hell are the ones at a disadvantage, with their narrow minded views. Do you think they’ll ever be happy or successful? Not a chance in the world.”

Khushi smiled and hugged Arnav again.

“Thank you. Thank you for not thinking I’m a little s**t…”

“Never use that word! You’re a god sent gift.”

After the longest time, Arnav and Khushi broke apart and Arnav got off the bed.

“It’s gotten late, we should go to sleep…”

“Please don’t leave me.”

“Leave you?”

“Stay with me, please.”

“Khushi…”

“I don’t want much, just please, sleep in the bed with me. You don’t have to come near me, I just want to know you’re still there because… Because you make me feel safe. Please Arnavji.”

Arnav nodded and got into the bed and switched the light off. Khushi too got into bed and switched the little lamp on her side of the bed off. They both stayed away from each other, Arnav at the far end of one side and Khushi on the other. He looked at her back, he was the reason for this distance between them. He was the one that hadn’t wanted to give their relationship a go. But that was changing. Not because he felt sorry for her, or he pitied her, but because he was growing more attached to her, more fond of her. The bubble of anger he felt when she was telling him what happened to her, it wasn’t because of any other reason but because he cared about her. Him wanting to find out her past, it was because he cared for her…

He looked at her. She really was one of the smarted, most innocent and beautiful women he’d ever met. She was so talented.

Was he falling in love with her? But Maya? Arnav lay there, confused about his feelings and then it all clicked into place. The way he felt about Khushi, he had never felt this way about Maya, he had never been so protective, never felt so much like a protector, he never wanted to care for her as much as he cared for Khushi.

Yes, he was falling in love with Khushi and he couldn’t wait to tell her. To finally tell her that he had fallen for her and he now wanted to be her husband. Arnav moved closer to Khushi who he assumed was now asleep and pulled her into his arms. Khushi turned in his arms.

“You’re still awake Khushi?”

“I… Arnavji…”

“Sh, just let me hold you.”

Khushi cuddled into Arnav and hid her face in his chest and smiled. Arnav felt this and his grip on her tightened.

“I swear, I’m never going to let you go now…”

Scars ~ Part 19

When Khushi got to AR, Raj was already there.

“Hi, morning, you okay?”

“I’m fine, you?”

“I’m really excited.”

“Well then why are we still out here.”

Khushi laughed and they both went into AR and met Aman who was waiting for them.

“Ah, you’ve arrived. Good morning. Now if you’ll please follow me. Again we have a small shoot, nothing major today. ASR has said that he wants you guys to be done in 2 and a half hours and when you’re done you’re to report to him to what he has to say. If he’s impressed, he’s willing to offer you both an internship and he’ll give you all the details. I’m a little busy today, so I wont be able to help you. But go straight through and we’re in the same studio as last time.

Any questions?”

Raj and Khushi looked at each other and then shook their heads.

“Excellent, so get going and good luck.”

Khushi and Raj made their way down to the studio and they began setting up. After 20 minutes of waiting to get started, people began to arrive and Raj instructed what he wanted everyone to wear and what he wanted them to do. Him and Khushi had a good system going and everything was working out perfectly.

The shoot happened and ended without any problems and they still had 15 minutes to spare before they had to report to ASR.

“Should we grab something to eat or?”

“We’ll eat after we’ve seen him.”

“Alright.”

When it was time, they made their way to Arnav’s office and knocked on the door.

“Come in.”

Raj pushed the door open and he let Khushi walk in before himself. Arnav looked up and there it was, The look of care and concern in Raj’s eyes for Khushi. He had seen it on the first day, at the party and he could see it again now. However there was something different this time. This time Raj looked… Well almost possessive. Something had changed there. Raj and Khushi sat down and Arnav noticed that Raj was watching Khushi closely.

“So can we see these pictures of yours now?”

Khushi nodded and hooked the camera onto the projector and they all looked through the pictures. Khushi and Raj looked through their pictures, however Arnav watched the pair of them. When they’d looked through all the pictures, Arnav clapped.

“Brilliant work! I loved all the pictures, you two really have done an amazing job.”

Arnav took papers out of his draw and passed them to Khushi and Raj.

“So as promised, as I’m impressed with your work, I am offering you both an internship here at AR for the rest of the academic year. After that, if one of you wishes  to leave you are free to do so and if I feel as though you truly would be an asset to our company, I will employ you to be a full time member of staff here.

I’ve already signed the papers because I knew you guys would do a great job, now you just have to sign them.”

“Sir this is an amazing offer, but we both are still at college, how can we accept an internship?”

“So what’s going to happen is that when you are scheduled for a photography lesson, you are going to come here instead and you will be working in my photography department. That was you get your assignments done and you get a great reference. And of course, I will be paying you.”

“Well, I guess that makes sense.”

Raj and Khushi looked at the contracts infront of them, pondering as to what they should do. Khushi read through the papers and signed, this is what Raj was working towards and he needed her to help him achieve what he wanted. Raj saw Khushi do this and he signed himself.

“Excellent. So I’ll have all the paperwork sent off to your college and I’m sure I’ll see you both more regularly, very, very soon.”

Khushi and Raj both stood up to leave.

“Raj, if you could wait a moment.”

Raj looked at Khushi who nodded and left the room and they watched as she made her way downstairs.

“I like to know what’s going on in the lives of my employers so that I can be as understanding as possible to whatever maybe going on. Is there anything I need to know about you and Khushi?”

“Pardon?”

“I mean, you and Khushi work so efficiently together. Is that just great teamwork or is there something more?”

“We’re friends sir, and that’s all.”

“Friends?”

“Yes, friends, I’m there for her when she needs me.”

“And does she need you a lot.”

“She has a lot going on in her life, I’m sure you’re aware of that.”

Arnav looked at Raj, a little confused.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, I know.”

“You know what exactly?”

“I know the truth.”

“And what truth is that?”

“That… That… That you and Khushi are married.”

Arnav was taken aback. He didn’t expect to hear this.

“How do you know?”

“Khushi told me.”

“She did?”

“She was upset and I made her tell me. But don’t worry, I’m not about to go and tell anyone. She made me swear it was a secret and I’m the only one that she’s ever told, so I’m going to stick to my promise and I won’t say anything.”

“You really care about her.”

“She’s an angel, I know that, it’s just sad other people can’t see that.”

“Believe it or not, I do care about her too.”

“Mr Raizada, you are superior to me, however, I will say this. Khushi is a special, amazing person and she’s been hurt badly. I don’t know her past, but I know enough about her present to realise that she’s had it tough. She deserves someone who cares about her.”

“I agree, she does. Someone who can love her and care for her.”

Raj looked at Arnav, was he missing something here?

“I agree, she needs someone who cares about her, and I think I’ve found the perfect person for her. Raj, I know enough to know you care about Khushi…”

“Please stop. I know what you’re trying to get at but my answer is no. You can take my internship away from or do whatever you like, but my answer to what you’re thinking is no.”

“Why?”

“Because she loves YOU. Nothing either of us can do can change that. Khushi is in love with her HUSBAND.”

“Raj, we can make her happy.”

“No we can’t. I can be her friend, but I can’t give her the love she deserves.”

“But you do love her, don’t you?”

“Yes, I do… But she wants her husband, not me and I can’t make her fall in love with me. So please, please, let’s put and end to this conversation.”

Raj left and Arnav stood there. So there goes that plan. But Arnav knew he found find something else to do.

Raj went back to find Khushi who was waiting for him at the bottom of the stairs.

“what did he want?”

“Nothing, he just needed to talk to me about a plan.”

“Oh I see.”

“Should we go now?”

“I guess so.”

Raj and Khushi left and Arnav watched them, there had to be a way to get the right care for Khushi.

Scars ~ Part 18

“Arnavji… He’s… I… He’s my husband.”

Raj looked at Khushi.

“Wait, what. Say that again.”

“I’m married Raj. And I’m married to Arnav Singh Raizada.”

“You are joking right.”

Khushi pushed back her hair and there it was, light and hidden but he could clearly see it now, sindoor.

“Why… How? I don’t understand.”

Khushi explained how Arnav didn’t want to make their marriage known to the public, hence why she still hadn’t taken on his name, hence why no announcement had been made to notify the world that India’s most eligible bachelor was no longer a bachelor.

“But Khushi… The party, the other woman Arnav was with?”

“That’s his girlfriend, his true love.”

Khushi looked away and Raj saw the tears in her eyes. That’s when he fully understood, she wasn’t joking about this. Raj moved over to Khushi and tried to comfort her.

“Do La and the rest of the gang know?”

“No one knows, only our families and now you. Please don’t tell anyone.”

“But Khushi…”

“Swear to me that you won’t tell anyone.”

“I swear. But Khushi, this is wrong. He can’t be with someone and in love with someone when he’s married to you.”

“But he is… His only option was to marry me, his sister wanted him to marry me and he’d never go against her. He loves his family so much. He’s never do anything to hurt them.”

“But what about you? What about what you deserve?”

“The Raizada’s have been good to me. They don’t look down on me the way other people do, they care for me. They made an orphan their daughter in law and they have accepted me. They’ve given me the opportunity to be here, to do something for myself. They let me go out with my friends, what more can I ask from them.”

“But you deserve to be loved and accepted by your husband.”

“You can’t force someone to love you.”

“But…”

“Raj, I know you mean well. But this is my life. This is me. We can’t change what was meant to happen and to be honest this marriage has been one of the best things that’s happened to me in a very long time. I’m not happy, but I’m not unhappy. I’ve been in worse situations.”

“I don’t even know what to say.”

“Please, don’t say anything. Forget all of this and let us finish our drinks and go back to worrying about work.”

“Khushi, you can’t expect me to forget all this.”

“But you have to, for my sake.”

“Is that why you never want me to drop you off or pick you up, because you didn’t want me to find out.”

Khushi nodded and Raj smiled sadly. They finished their hot chocolates and they paid and left.

“Let me drop you off home today.”

Khushi thought for a moment and then nodded. They got a taxi and they began making their way to Raizada house. They didn’t speak much and Raj tried to digest everything that Khushi had told him. When they got to the gates of Shantivan, Khushi got out.

“Thank you. For everything Raj.”

“Khushi there’s one thing I want to say to you and that’s this, angel, you don’t need someone who treats you like anything less than what you actually are.”

Khushi looked at Raj, his words circling her mind over and over again. She smiled and then turned to leave. When she reached the door, Raj left and that’s when Khushi bumped into Arnav.

“Who was that?”

“Arnav, I’m not in the mood to…”

“I asked who that guy was.”

“I don’t need to tell you who I go out with.”

“I’m your husband. I have a right to know.”

“My husband. MY HUSBAND. Please, don’t annoy me, again I’m not in the mood.”

Arnav took hold of Khushi’s hand and took her away from the door and opened the door of his car and got her to get in. He then got in himself.

“Khushi, listen, I just want to look out for you.”

“I don’t need you to look out for me. I’ve always managed on my own and I can still manage on my own.”

“Yeah, I’ve seen how well you can cope on your own.”

“What the hell is that meant to mean?”

“Nothing, I just…”

Arnav took Khushi’s hands in his own, but Khushi pulled her hands away from him.

“Please, don’t touch me.”

“Okay, fine, I won’t. But Khushi, let me take care of you.”

“Again, I don’t need you to take care of me.”

“I know you’ve always managed on your own, but you don’t need to any more. You have Payal and Di and Nani and your friends… You have me.”

“But that’s the point, I don’t have you Arnavji. Don’t you see, you can never be mine.”

“Khushi this isn’t about me. I understand what you’re saying but that doesn’t change anything, I can still look out for you, care about you…”

Khushi turned away from him and began getting out of the car. Arnav banged the steering wheel and that’s when Khushi turned to him once more.

“It was Raj. He was the one that dropped me off.”

And with that she left. Arnav thought to himself.

“Raj…”

*****

“Hi, is that Raj? I’m Aman from AR Designs, Mr Raizada has asked me to let you know that he would like you and Miss Gupta to come in and take some more photographs for us. He was really impressed with your work and your teamwork and so we’d like you to come in again. We’ve already contacted your college and they’ve said it’s okay for the pair of you to be out of lessons tomorrow.”

“I’m flattered that Mr Raizada was so impressed with our work, however before I make any commitments, I will have to speak to Khushi. I mean if she doesn’t agree then I can’t do this without her.”

“I can understand, but please be sure to tell Miss Gupta that if you both are successful tomorrow, Mr Raizada is willing to offer you both internships here at AR.”

“Wow that really is amazing! Thank you so much, can you tell Mr Raizada I said thanks. Okay I’ll contact Khushi and then I’ll call you back.”

“Please let us know as soon as possible.”

“I will do.”

Raj disconnected the call and looked at his phone in disbelief. An internship at AR! That’s all he ever wanted! And to think his dream was coming true. But Khushi… And why was ASR doing this? He didn’t need them, he had teams and teams of professional photographers, why did he need them? Something wasn’t adding up, but the only way to find out would be by talking to the great ASR himself.

Raj called Khushi and explained what had just happened.

“That’s great Raj, you should go for it.”

“But the thing is, this isn’t an offer just for me, it’s for both of us, and I can’t do this without you. But I understand if you don’t want to.”

“No I’ll do it.”

“You will?”

“Of course, I know how much these means to you. What kind of a friend would I be if I put myself before your dreams.”

“Khushi, really you don’t have to.”

“Raj, it’ll be fine, trust me.”

*****

“So you’re coming to AR today?”

“Yes I am, would you rather I didn’t?”

“No of course not. I want you to come hence why I requested for you and Raj specially.”

“But why?”

“Because I like the work the pair of you produce.”

“But you have many, many people. Why do you want to have us, a pair of kids working for you?”

“Fresh talent, a new perspective.”

“I see.”

“Well hurry and get ready and I’ll take you with me.”

“There’s no need, I can get there myself.”

“I know you can, but I want to take you there.”

“Fine, just give me 10 minutes.”

Khushi went to the bathroom to get ready and Arnav smiled.

“If I can’t be the one to make you happy and give you what you deserve, than I will find someone who I think can make you happy.”

Scars ~ Part 17

Arnav’s first stop was the orphanage. He knocked on the door and one of the kids opened the door and called for someone to come see. An elderly woman came to the door.

“Arnav saab, please, come in.”

Arnav entered and all the children watched him. He woman ushered him into the office and gestured for him to take a seat.

“To what do I owe this pleasure? Is Anjali ma’am okay?”

“She’s fine, but I haven’t come due to that. I’ve come here to let you know that I am going to press charges against yourself for I do not feel that you have been giving all the children the correct amount of care and attention.”

“Excuse me. With all due respect Mr Raizada, I do not feel you can do something like that.”

“I haven’t done anything yet, however this is the plan once I get enough evidence against you. So I suggest you start packing your things away and walk away, otherwise you’ll spend the rest of your life behind bars.”

“Mr Raizada…”

Arnav stood up.

“I haven’t got anything else to say right now. Thank you for your time. Think about what I just said.”

With that Arnav left, leaving the woman behind him highly confused as to what was going on. Arnav left the building and then made his way to Khushi’s social workers office. Once he got there he realised he’s arrived at an agency. The receptionist said that he couldn’t meet anyone without an appointment.

“I’m Arnav Singh Raizada. You cannot tell me that I can’t meet someone when I know I need to see them.”

“Mr Raizada, I really can’t…”

“What’s going on out here. Tina, who does this man wish to see?”

“He wishes to see you ma’am.”

“I have a free slot, I can see Mr Raizada.”

The social worker let Arnav into her office.

“Mr Raizada, how may I help you?”

“It’s been brought to my attention that you were the social worker of Khushi Kumari Gupta.”

“Ah Khushi, yes, I was her social worker, but of course she hasn’t been my responsibility for a long time.”

“But when she was your responsibility?”

“I feel like I did whatever was necessary for her and I did everything I could. But why are you asking me all this?”

“Yet you never looked further into the topic of whether she really was harming herself or not.”

“I wasn’t able to. I brought it to the attention of those who were in charge of her, however it wasn’t my place to look further when they didn’t. I wanted them to look further into the matter but no one ever did.”

“As her social worker you had a right to ask her, you had a duty to make sure she felt safe and secure.”

“She never said anything more and it didn’t feel right to pry.”

“If you found no one looked into the matter why didn’t you take it up with those in charge again, make them …”

“Mr Raizada, Khushi was almost 16 at the time. She was soon to leave our care. Because of the fact that she was almost 16 there was a lot of things we couldn’t pry because she required her privacy.”

“But it was a highly serious matter.”

“I understand your concern, and I really am sorry and if I was able to get in touch with Khushi now I would tell her I’m sorry I couldn’t do more to help her. But it’s too late and she’s probably happy and living her life now. We all move on and that’s what we need to do here too.”

Arnav looked at the woman and shook his head.

“I understand. But I know for a fact you’re still working as a social worker. All I want to say is that the mistakes you made with Khushi, please don’t make them with other children.”

“I promise you Mr Raizada, I aim to do a better job now.”

Arnav felt like there was nothing more he could do. But it was true, Khushi was suffering and due to that she was harming herself. Now all he needed to do was make sure it was something that she wasn’t doing it any more and if she was, he needed to get her the help she needed to help her deal with her problems.

*****

It was a few days later and Khushi had her photography lesson. She had been dreading seeing Raj because she didn’t want things to be awkward between them. When she walked into the class, Raj smiled to her and she took her seat next to him.

“You okay?”

“I’m fine, you?”

“I’m good. Did you get home okay after the party?”

This caused Khushi to remember what happened once she left. The random man that had grabbed her and then what happened between her and Arnan… It all came back to her. How he’d touched her, how he’d got even closer to her, how his lips felt on hers, on her skin… How his hands had left when they brushed over her body…

“Khushi…?”

“Can we just start working.”

Khushi and Raj took their work out and they began putting their final piece together. It was then Raj realised that they were short of pictures.

“Khushi we need more pictures. If we don’t have exactly 75 pictures, we can’t submit our work and we only have 55 pictures here.”

“How are we meant to get the rest?”

“I guess we’ll have to put in a request to go to AR again.”

“No we can’t go there. ”

“Khushi, I don’t understand what your problem is. You’re such a positive person but when it comes to Mr Raizada, it’s like you become a different person. You speak to him in a funny way and then when we see him at a party you refuse to go and speak to him. What is up with you?”

“Raj can we just get something sorted please.”

“No I refuse to work until you tell me what the issue is.”

“I can’t.”

“What do you mean you can’t?”

“I just can’t Raj, please try to understand.”

“Khushi, if you’ve ever considered me as your friend, then you’ll tell me.”

“Okay fine. I’ll tell you, but after lesson and over a hot chocolate. My treat.”

Raj nodded and they began to get on with their work. It was once the lesson ended, Raj made sure that Khushi couldn’t leave him. They made their way to a little tea shop and Khushi ordered for 2 hot chocolates. Khushi tried to make conversation but Raj made her cut the chase.

“Khushi, please, just tell me.”

“Raj… I…”

“Go on.”

“Arnavji… He’s… I… He’s my husband.”

Scars ~ Part 16

Khushi waited up that night, but Arnav didn’t come home. By 2 am Khushi couldn’t keep herself awake any longer and so she went to sleep. Arnav got home just past half 2 and saw Khushi asleep. Thank god she’d fallen asleep. It would have been highly awkward if she was still awake.

He moved over to her sleeping form, he was deadly attracted to her. She was nothing like what he had thought of her when they first got married. To begin with, he’d just thought of her to be a middle class, damp, uneducated girl. But now… She was a smart, talented, feisty, sexy woman who had truly captivated his attention. But he didn’t love her…

Arnav tucked Khushi in and that’s when he saw her arm. All the way up her left arm were scars. He moved to turn the lights on and that’s when he fully saw them. Lots and lots of scars. They were more up at the top of her arm as opposed to being towards her hands, but sure enough they were there. They varied in lengths and some looked lighter than others, suggesting that they were all from different times. Arnav switched the light back off and went over to his recliner. How? Where did all these scars come from and how come he’d never noticed them before. He thought about it, she always wore long sleeves and her arms were always covered. None of the scars looked too recent but they were still recent enough for the scars to be more than visible. Arnav looked over at Khushi, something here wasn’t quite adding up and he needed to get to the bottom of the matter…

*****

The next morning, Arnav woke up before Khushi and quickly got ready. He then went to Anjali’s room and knocked on the door. Anjali opened up and looked at Arnav confused.

“Chote, what are you doing here to early?”

“I just needed to check your accounts Di, because something doesn’t quite add up in one of mine and I want to check if they’ve made any mistakes in your too.”

“Oh, I have looked through mine and they all look fine, but sure.”

Anjali let Arnav into her room and opened up her draw where she kept all her paperwork.

“Has jiiu already left?”

“No he’s just gone down for breakfast. Is Khushi up yet?”

“No, she’s still asleep.”

Anjali nodded and left the room. Arnav took out Anjali’s papers and took out her large folder where all the paperwork regarding the orphanage was. Khushi’s file had to be here. And then her found it. A little blue folder, separate from the bigger folder labelled Khushi, Arnav took the papers out and started looking through them. Pages and pages and pages on Khushi’s past. The things she did, how she performed in school, what she was allergic too, medical records and then personal notes made by her social workers. After flicking through sheets and sheets, he finally found what he was looking for.

“16th Feb, 2010. Khushi is 15 years and 10 months. I have met with Khushi and sat down to talk to her after a good 3 months. A lot seems to have changed in this time. Although Khushi didn’t tell me much, it is evident she isn’t enjoying school and due to this her grades have dropped a significant amount. I will request a full report from her school to evaluate further. Khushi is telling me she’s happy, however, she seems to have lost her general buzz. After speaking to her for a little while, she has let slip that the bullying has started up again and she feels like it’s all getting to much for her. I ask her how she is coping and she smiles at me sadly and says she’s coping in a new way which is only for her to know. From this I fear Khushi may have taken to self harm, however I cannot be sure. Hence why I am asking for the matrons here to keep a specially close eye on Khushi until my next meeting with her. Please keep a note on anything she says or anything she does and let me know and keep it in her file.”

Arnav slumped back in his chair. Self harm…? He looked through more sheets and finds another one which was written up 2 weeks after the one he’s just read. He notices it’s by someone else.

“We have kept an eye on Khushi for the past 2 weeks. She seems to be fine. Nothing out of the ordinary, nothing to worry about, we have said she doesn’t require any special attention and that an emergency meeting with her social worker isn’t requires.”

Arnav continued to look through the papers however there was nothing more on the topic of her self harm. Arnav put all the papers back in order and put everything back for Anjali but took down the name and address of Khushi’s social worker and of the matrons who helped at the orphanage when Khushi was staying there. Her social worker had been right, Khushi had taken up self harm to deal with her problems yet no one looked into the matter, no one cared. No one gave her the help or care she needed to help her recover from what she was going through. Khushi was 15, almost 16 when she began to self harm, and she was now almost 20… 4 years had passed. How had no one noticed, how had no one taken time out to try and help her?

Arnav tidied up and left Anjali’s room and went back to his own where Khushi was now awake and getting ready for the day ahead of her. She looked at Arnav and tried to smile but failed. Memories of last night still there in both their minds. Arnav realised something needed to be said, but he didn’t want to hurt her feelings, know her condition.

“Khushi I…”

“It’s alright, I understand. It was a spur of the moment kind of thing, didn’t have any meaning. It just happened and so we should forget about it and carry on as though it never happened.”

“Khushi…”

“Please. I don’t want to think about it any more.”

Arnav nodded and left the room. He looked at the short list of names and addresses that he had and it was clear what needed to be done. He grabbed and apple and then left the house in a hurry.

“Khushi, where’s Chote going?”

“I’m not sure. He doesn’t tell me these things.”

Khushi went into the kitchen and Payal followed her.

“Khushi, is everything okay?”

“Everything’s fine jiji.”

“Are you sure?”

“Nothing I can’t handle.”

“Khushi, I’m still your sister, if you need me, I’ll always be here for you.”

“I’ve always managed on my own and I can still manage on my own.”

And with that Khushi left the kitchen and Payal watched her go. She could remember the days when Khushi would tell her every little thing, but those days were gone and it was all her mothers fault. If her mother hadn’t done what she had, Khushi would still be her baby sister.

*****

Arnav got in his car. He didn’t know why he was doing this, but it felt like the right thing to do. He needed to understand Khushi, needed to know more about her and if this was the only way, then he needed to do something.

Scars ~ Part 15

Khushi made her way out to the car park to find her car. But she couldn’t see it. She walked further into the dark and that’s when a pair of strong arms grabbed her from behind.

Khushi gasped and tried to call out for help but the person holding her covered her mouth. Khushi tried to kick but was unable to. The person carried her over and took her round the back and pushed her up against a wall.

“I’ve had my eye on you the whole evening. I’ve been waiting for you to leave. And just to my luck, you left alone.”

“Who are you? What do you want from me?”

“Oh come on now. What do you think a man would want from such a beautiful woman?”

“I can’t give you anything, please let me go!”

“Why on earth would I do that?”

Khushi looked up at the person who was holding her, but failed to recognise him.

“Please, I don’t know who you are, please let me go.”

Khushi tried to dodge past the man and get away but he caught hold of her dress and ripped it.

“Please stop, please let me go.”

“Not until you give me what you want.”

Khushi caught a whiff of the mans breath and sure enough he had been drinking. What could she do? Everyone else was inside, by the time anyone came out the man could have done what he wanted and left her. Khushi prayed, hoping for someone to come along and save her. The man ran his hand down her cheek.

“You really are a beautiful find.”

It was exactly then the man was wrenched off her. It was so dark, Khushi couldn’t register what was happening, but then next thing she knew the guy was being beaten up.

“How dare you touch her? Who the hell do you think you are?”

Arnav… It was Arnav who had come to rescue her. Khushi watched as Arnav beat the guy up and pushed him to the floor, leaving him bleeding. He then walked over to Khushi who threw herself into Arnav’s arms.

“Thank you. God knows what would have happened to me if you hadn’t come.”

Arnav held Khushi and let her hug him. This all felt so strange, having Khushi in his arms. Khushi held onto Arnav, trying to get as close to him as she could. She inhaled Arnav’s scent, his strong masculine perfume intoxicating her. Arnav broke the hug and looked at Khushi.

“Lets go home.”

“But you’re still meant to be here.”

“But I can’t let you go off on your own, not right after being attacked.”

“I’m so sorry about the dress, it’s ruined.”

“Don’t worry about it, I’ll get you a new one.”

They made their way to Arnav’s car and they both sat down. Arnav looked over to Khushi who was now fully aware that her dress was pretty much falling off her because the other man had ripped it. Arnav took his jacket off and handed it over to her. Khushi put it on and she could smell him. God, he smelt so good. On the way back, both were thinking about the hug they shared and this caused the tension in the car to heighten.

Once they got home both Arnav and Khushi went to their room, no one else seemed to be around.

“So the time you were there, did you enjoy yourself?”

This was the first time Khushi fully looked at Arnav and everything she’d seen came crashing back to her.

“So is that why you wanted me to go to the party, so that I could see you with Maya?”

“No Khushi…”

“I got the message Arnav.”

“I swear, it wasn’t because of Maya.”

“Why would you want me there, just to see you with your lover.”

“Khushi I didn’t know.”

“Didn’t know what?”

“I didn’t know Maya was going to come. She told me she wasn’t going to be able to make it, but then last minute she turned up.”

“If you think I’m going to believe you.”

“I swear to you Khushi, I didn’t do it for that reason.”

“Stop lying Arnavji.”

“For gods sake Khushi!”

And with that Arnav grabbed Khushi’s arms and pushed her into the wall, his body covering hers.

“I’m Arnav Singh Raizada. I don’d need to pull such a low stunt. If I wanted to show you that I was with Maya I could easily call her over to my house. So don’t you dare call me a liar.”

Khushi looked up and Arnav and she stopped struggling against him. She looked at him, aware of how close they were. It should feel awkward, indecent even, but it didn’t. Arnav looked down at Khushi and couldn’t help but notice her eyes. Those bright hazel eyes, and her long lashes. His eyes dropped to her lips, her ever so slightly pink, plump lips. Untouched lips…

Arnav lowered his head, his eyes fluttering closed and he closed the distance between their lips. Khushi too closed her eyes, anticipating what was to come. And then their lips touched. The kiss was slow and sweet, Arnav led but Khushi too followed. His hands moved from her arms up to her shoulders and then to the back of her neck. He pulled her into himself. Khushi raised her own hands and held onto Arnav’s arms, begging for her body not to give way, for she felt as though she could melt any second. When they got into the kiss, Arnav’s hands began exploring, he found where her dress was torn and began pushing away at the dress, leaving her upper body exposed to himself. Khushi shivered, realising what was happening and moved further into Arnav. She could feel his manliness now, poking her stomach ever so slightly. Arnav lifted Khushi off the floor, never breaking their kiss and took her over to the bed where he pushed her dress down her body completely, leaving her in nothing but her panties and her bra. Khushi pulled Arnav onto herself and he kissed her neck.

“Arnavjii…”

This caused Arnav’s eyes to snap open. He looked at Khushi beneath him and he jumped away from her.

“F**k!”

Khushi looked at him, confused and he ran his hand through his hair violently.

“S**t. What the hell.”

Arnav got off the bed and threw a blanket over Khushi and began walking away. Khushi watched him, not really understanding what was going on.

“Arnavji…”

He didn’t turn around.

“Forget what happened. It was a mistake. I’m sorry I got your hopes up.”

And with that he left the room. Khushi looked at the door, hoping he’d come back in again, but he didn’t. She moved the blanket and looked at herself. Did he not like what he saw? Was there something wrong with her that made him stop? Did she do something wrong? Khushi wanted to kick herself.

*****

Arnav sat in his car and banged his steering wheel. What the hell was wrong with him? He closed his eyes, trying to block out all thoughts but there it was. The kiss he and Khushi shared playing in his mind over and over and over again. He opened his eyes and there he could see her, standing there in her black lacy lingerie. She looked so hot, her curves teasing him. Her perfectly round globes calling out to him to be set free, to be touched, to be kissed…

But he couldn’t. They couldn’t. Yes Khushi was attractive, yes she was damn sexy, but he couldn’t… They couldn’t. And then Maya came to mind. Maya… Lovely Maya. The only person who understood him, the only one that stood by him when no one else was. Maya, his love… Yet, what had just happened with Khushi had never happened with Maya. Him and Maya had been together for almost 4 years now and obviously they shared kisses here and there, yet he’d never gotten so into the kiss that he’d managed to take her clothes off and get her into bed!

What the hell was going on?

Scars ~ Part 14

Khushi was dressed in the dress Arnav brought for her. It was a western style dress but it was a long flowing one. It was black and quite fitted, but regardless, Khushi loved it. She wore her dress with a pair of high heeled black shoes and damn she looked good. She looked at the dress again and smiled. It was the first thing Arnav had brought for her, the first sign of him accepting her. Maybe they could make their relationship work.

When it was time, and Khushi was all ready, she got on of the drivers to drop her off at the hotel. All her friends were already there waiting for her. Lavanya was the first to see her.

“I’m actually so glad you came! Thanks Khushi.”

“It’s my pleasure.”

They entered the hotel and their other friends went their own ways. Lavanya, Raj and Khushi remained together. And that’s when Khushi saw him.

Saw Arnav…

“Khushi look, its ASR. We should go say hi to him.”

“No.”

Khushi’s heart hurt. So this is why he took over the sponsorship for this. So this was why he was so desperate for her to be here. Khushi looked away and then looked up again and sure enough what she saw didn’t change. There with Arnav, was a beautiful woman in a sari. She was holding onto Arnav and gazing up at him, with total admiration. So this must have been his love.

“Damn who’s she? She’s beautiful.”

Khushi turned to Lavanya who was looking at the woman with Arnav.

“Do you think that’s his wife or something, although I’ve never heard of the great ASR having a wife, have you?”

Khushi shook her head but she could feel a lump in her throat. Lavanya was right. The woman with Arnav did look like she could be his wife. She was tall and had stunning curves, not like Khushi. Khushi felt like a little kid compared to her. No wonder Arnav preferred her.

“La, I’m just going to the bathroom.”

“But we just got here.”

“I’ll be back in a minute.”

Khushi rushed off to the bathroom and looked at herself in the mirror. God why must she look so much like a kid? Who was she kidding? When she’d left the house, she felt so mature and she thought she looked sexy, but now, looking at herself she felt more like a kid than ever. Khushi tried to hold back the tears, the last thing she needed was to start crying and make a mess of her face.

Just then the bathroom door opened and the woman who was with Arnav walked in. Khushi looked at her. The woman walked gracefully over to where Khushi was standing and she fixed her hair. Khushi gripped the side of the sink and the woman looked at Khushi.

“Are you okay there? You look a bit pale?”

“I’m fine.”

“Are you one of the college students.”

Khushi nodded slowly.

“Are you enjoying the party so far.”

Khushi didn’t say anything.

“I love your dress. Is that one of AR Design’s latest pieces?”

“Yes it is.”

“It looks really good on.”

“Thank you. I like your sari too.”

“Thanks. I’m Maya by the way.”

“Khushi.”

“That’s a lovely name. Any way, are you sure you’re okay Khushi? You really do look a bit pale. Would you like me to tell someone that you’re not feeling well.”

“No it’s fine, don’t worry. Was nice meeting you, I have to go now.”

And with that Khushi rushed out of the bathroom. Why must this be happening. She thought about her encounter with Maya, oh how she wished she could hate her, but she really couldn’t. Maya seemed like a genuinely caring person.

Khushi went back to La, who was talking to people from college. She stood there and saw when Maya came back to Arnav. He looked so glad to have Maya back by his side. It was then that they made eye contact. Arnav looked over to Khushi and saw her and his expression fell a little. He looked at Maya and then back at Khushi. Khushi looked away, trying to stop the tears. She turned so her back was now to Arnav and took a little kebab from the table and picked up a glass of juice. She tried to engage in conversation with other people around her but she kept finding herself looking over to where Arnav and Maya were now slow dancing. They looked so cosy and happy together. They didn’t have a care in the world. They were such a happy couple and this made Khushi feel so mad. It was then that Raj approached her.

“Would you like to dance?”

“Not really Raj.”

“Come on, please, just one dance.”

Khushi thought for a while and then nodded. Raj took Khushi’s hand and led her onto the dance floor.

“You look really beautiful today.”

“Thank you.”

Raj took hold of Khushi properly and they began to sway to the music.

“Khushi, there’s something I wanted to tell you but I really didn’t know how to.”

“What is it?”

“Khushi… I… Khushi, I really like you. And I was thinking, maybe we could…”

Khushi pulled away and looked at Raj with big eyes.

“What are you saying? I don’t understand.”

“I really like you Khushi and I was wondering… Maybe you’d like to go out with me sometime.”

Khushi’s mind went into overdrive. She recalled all the things her friends had told her about Raj. Like how he’d never really been with anyone because he was waiting for the right girl to come along. Khushi looked at Raj… She was the one he was waiting for?

“Khushi, I know this maybe a little bit too much for you, but I swear I really like you and I’d love to get to know you better.”

“Raj… I can’t.”

“I get it, you need time to think.”

“No I really don’t. Please Raj, you’re my friend but don’t complicate things.”

“But…”

“My answer is a no and it will always remain a no. I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay… I… I understand.”

“I think I’m going to go home now.”

“Let me drop you off.”

“No I’ll be fine.”

With that, Khushi went to find her other friends, told them she was going and she began to leave. She turned to see where Arnav was, but he was no longer around but she could still see Maya talking to other people. Life had a way of playing unfair games. Here she had Raj who cared about her, who wanted to be with her. And then there was Arnav. Her husband. The man she wanted to be with but who didn’t want her. Why was life so unfair? Why must something like this happen? Why couldn’t she have just gotten married to someone like Raj who would have accepted her and loved her.

Khushi made her way out to the car park to find her car. But she couldn’t see it. She walked further into the dark and that’s when a pair of strong arms grabbed her from behind…

Scars ~ Part 13

Raj took Khushi out for coffee and they discussed there day.

“Such a great day Khushi and to think, we’re getting references from Arnav Singh Raizada.”

“Hmm.”

“What’s the matter Khushi, I don’t get you.”

“You don’t need to.”

Khushi looked at her watched and realised it was time to go.

“I have to go now.”

“I’ll drop you off.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll go myself.”

Khushi got up and left and Raj watched her go. What was up with Khushi. She was such a closed character, yet she was never unfriendly. But something about how she was today with ASR got him thinking. Why would she act like that?

*****

When Khushi got home, she bumped into Anjali.

“So tell me how your day was! You saw my Chote in action.”

“I guess so. Di I hope you don’t mind but I’m really tired so…”

“Of course, of course. Off you go.”

Khushi smiled and left. Once she was alone in her room she reflected on the day. On what Arnav had said before they’d left. He was in love with someone else…

Why didn’t she see it before? It was obvious that he would have someone in his life. Khushi sat down. What was she to do now? Just sit around and waste her life with a man that would never want her. Khushi toughened herself up and decided that she’d sort this with Arnav once and for all.

*****

Arnav got home a little later. Today was a good day. His major shoot for AR was now done and dusted. He’d be able to relax for a couple of days now. Arnav took a seat in his recliner and pushed his head back into the recliner. He heard the door open and saw Khushi walk in.

“Arnavji we need to talk.”

“We really don’t. We did all our talking this morning.”

“I’m not done.”

“Well I am.”

“I want a divorce.”

Arnav’s head snapped up.

“I explained this before.”

“And I’ve been thinking. We’ll explain to everyone that you love someone else and then you can get together, I’m sure they’ll understand.”

“They won’t! That’s why I’m married to you.”

“But what kind of a life is this for us. You’re stuck with me and I’m stuck with someone who doesn’t want me.”

“Are you saying you want me.”

Khushi looked away.

“Answer me damn it.”

“Yes.”

“Yes what.”

“I want you.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re my husband.”

“That’s not a reason. There are plenty of women who don’t want their husbands.”

“Okay fine, because I’ve fallen in love with you.”

“But why?”

“Because I have!”

Khushi looked away.

“It just happened okay. I don’t know when or how. But it did.”

Arnav looked at Khushi. How could she have fallen in love with him. He’d tried to make sure that she didn’t. He wanted to say something but Khushi’s phone rang. She moved to answer it.

“Hello?”

“Khushi, it’s Lavanya. I forgot to tell you. It’s Valentines day tomorrow and we have a small dance at college. You must come.”

“I can’t.”

“Why not?”

“I just can’t. Besides, I don’t even have a Valentine.”

“Khushi, please, it’s only a bit of fun.”

“I’ll think about it.”

“Make sure you hurry and think and let me know.”

Khushi disconnected the call and shook her head. Arnav looked at her.

“You should go.”

“Excuse me.”

“You should go to the party.”

“How do you know?”

“That’s the biggest event happening tomorrow so.”

“Well I’m not going.”

“Why not?”

“Because I don’t do those kinds of things.”

“Khushi, go out with your friends and enjoy yourself.”

Khushi shot a look at Arnav.

“Oh so you suddenly care do you?”

“Khushi don’t be like this.”

“Why shouldn’t I?”

“Because you deserve to enjoy life.”

“I also deserve to be treated like a wife.”

This shut Arnav up.

“All I’m saying is that I saw how your friend Raj was with you today and I think you have good friends and you should spend time with them.”

Khushi shook her head and walked off. That’s when Arnav had an idea and began making some calls.

*****

It was much later that evening when Khushi and all the other college students began to receive texts and emails from their college. The message read the same thing; *The annual Valentines Day dance has been sponsored by AR Designs and in account of that the party will take place at the Royal Mill Hotel tomorrow evening. Tickets have been paid for and everyone is welcome. We look forward to seeing you all there.*

This angered Khushi. What the hell was Arnav playing at. But still. She refused to go and that was that. Khushi got ready for bed and went to sleep…

*****

The next morning, Khushi woke up and found that it was just past half 8. There was no college as it was a Saturday, But Arnav had already left for the day. Khushi got up and got ready and began doing what she usually does on a Saturday. It was just then that Lavanya called.

“Did you get the message about the changes?”

“Yes I did.”

“So, I’m still not going.”

“Khushi please, it’ll be fun.”

“Lavanya, that’s really not my kind of scene.”

“I get that, I swear I do, but I really want you to come too.”

“Lavanya…”

“Please Khushi, please, I’ll never ask anything of you again.”

“Okay fine. I’ll come with you guys.”

Khushi disconnected the call and then realised she couldn’t just go off like that. She needed to get permission first. So she went down to ask Nani. Nani was sitting in the living room, speaking with Manorama.

“Naniji, I was just wondering if I could ask you something.”

“Go ahead my dear.”

“Wo… The annual Valentines Day dance is happening today and all my friends really want me to go with them. So I was wondering if I could…”

“Of course you can my dear! You don’t even need to ask.”

“Are you sure Nani?”

“Of course. I don’t mind. If I let Anjali go to these kinds of things, I’m hardly going to stop you. Go out, have a good time and don’t worry about getting home early. Come back whenever you feel like you’ve partied enough.”

Khushi smiled, thanked Nani and began making her way to her room. How was it that people would kill to have her life because they’d pretty much have the ability to do whatever they wanted. Khushi went up to her room and opened up her wardrobe. She really didn’t know what to wear. Just then there was a knock at her door.

“Come in.”

Arnav walked in.

“So you’re going to the party?”

“Yes I am.”

“That’s a good thing then.”

“How so?”

Arnav handed Khushi over a wrapped box.

“I got this for you. I feel like we got off on the wrong foot and maybe I should try a little harder to accept this relationship.”

“Are you being serious?”

“Yeah, I mean, I thought about yesterday and I guess I was being unfair. If we’re both stuck in this relationship we may as well start coming to terms with it.”

Khushi smiled and accepted the present. Maybe things were about to start changing for the better…

Scars ~ Part 12

“No. I will never accept you as my wife.”

Khushi looked away.

“Then why don’t we end this.”

“I just told you. This is what my family wants.”

“What about what you want.”

“I can manage.”

“What about me.”

“What about you for gods sake.”

“I want a husband. Someone who loves me, cares for me. Someone who will hold me close at night. Someone who, one day, I will have children with.”

“I’m sorry Khushi. But it’s not going to happen. I could never… Just no.”

“Why do you dislike me so much? It’s like I disgust you. It’s as though even the thought of touching me wants to make you sick. Why?”

“Khushi, don’t make me mad again. I’m not disgusted of you. It’s not that I’m repulsed by you, hence why I don’t want to touch you. It’s not that okay.”

“Then what, Arnavji please. I have a right to know.”

“Don’t you get it? Do you seriously not get it?”

“NO I don’t.”

“I love someone else okay.”

Khushi’s eyes widened and she felt her heart shatter into a million pieces. Her husband… Was in love with someone else?

“Then why didn’t you tell Di and Nani and everyone else. Why didn’t you marry her?”

“Because no one let me! Why must we talk about this! Do you think I want to talk about this?”

“Let’s just go please.”

Arnav looked at Khushi. She’d already turned away. She was so dismissive. Arnav drove off, but all the way to AR he was thinking. Did Khushi love him? Is that why she’s so emotional about all this? Once they got to AR, Khushi got out of the car and made her way to the entrance. Arnav watched her go. Di was right, Khushi wasn’t stupid. She maybe of lower class than him, but one wouldn’t be able to tell. Khushi was smart and she had class. But she wasn’t for him. There was only one person that could ever be for him and one day Khushi would realise that.

Khushi walked in and Raj was already there, waiting for her.

“Hey! Finally! You took your time.”

“I’m sorry, I got a little caught up.”

“It’s fine, don’t worry. Come on now, we have to report to a Mr Aman.”

Aman. Khushi had heard this name so many times. Arnav was almost always on the phone to Aman, but she had never met this man yet. As soon as they reached reception, a man came forward to greet them.

“Ah, you must be Raj and Khushi. Good morning. Now, everything for the photo shoot is being prepared and we’ll get started in about 15 minutes. Raj, I believe you will orchestrate the whole thing while Khushi takes the pictures?”

“That’s correct sir.”

“Right so once the photo shoot is complete, we will go through the pictures with ASR and if he likes them then everything’s fine. If he doesn’t we may have some problems.”

“What’s going to happen if he doesn’t like them?”

“Well you two get a bad reference and we have to go through the entire shoot again with a new photography team.”

“Oh alright.”

“Well if you come with me, I’ll take you to where the shoots going to take place and you can get your things sorted.”

Aman led Raj and Khushi down a long corridor and Khushi looked around. So this was all Arnav’s. Everything he’s ever worked for, everything he’s still working his socks off for. She looked up and saw a large class cabin on the second floor. There she saw ASR, pacing.

Aman noticed Khushi looking.

“Yes that’s ASR’s office. And that there is ASR himself. The blinds are almost always opened, he likes being able to keep an eye on everything.”

Khushi nodded and they continued down the corridor until they finally came to their destination. Aman opened the door and Khushi saw all the racks racks of clothes down the sides. There were models grabbing clothes and rushing into the changing rooms.

“You have 10 minutes everyone hurry and get ready. We’re on a tight schedule.”

“Come on Khushi lets got all this sorted.”

Raj and Khushi began to get their equipment sorted and they spoke about what their general plan was. Khushi nodded as Raj explained.

A little while later, the photo shoot began. Raj instructed the models to do certain poses and fixed the lighting and did whatever else he needed to do. Khushi made sure she got all the best angles and snapped away, picture after picture. An hour and a half later the photo shoot was complete. The models left and the helps tidied up. Aman walked over to Raj and Khushi.

“Well, I think that went really well. Any way, ASR is expecting us, can’t keep him waiting, let’s got and show him these pictures. I’m sure they’re all amazing. You both seemed to be doing amazingly. The pair of you work so much more efficiently than an entire team of expert photographers.”

Aman led them out and they made their way to ASR’s cabin. Khushi breathed in. Would this be highly awkward? Or would Arnav be all business like and not really notice her?

At the top of the stairs, they turned left and walked down  a corridor until they finally arrived at a door. Aman knocked.

“Come in.”

Aman opened the door and let Khushi and Raj walk in before himself. Arnav stood up. Raj almost ran to Arnav and shook his hand.

“Mr Raizada, thank you so much for giving us this opportunity. It means so much to us!”

“It’s nothing. I needed a photography team and you need references and I must admit Raj, your portfolio was highly impressive. I hadn’t seen one of such high standard in while.”

“Why thank you sir, but there’s a lot of Khushi’s work in there too, we’ve been working together for a while.”

“Yes I noticed that too.”

Arnav looked over at Khushi who wasn’t looking at him.

“Well let’s have a look at the pictures you took today, please, take a seat.”

Raj and Khushi sat down opposite Arnav and Khushi plugged the camera onto the laptop which was connected up to the projector. Aman handed Arnav the remote and they began looking at the pictures. One by one, Arnav slowly flicked through them all, saving the ones he liked. So far only one had been deleted from the list. Once the slideshow of pictures ended, Arnav looked up and paused for a while. Then he spoke once more.

“I must admit. These are very well executed pictured and the quality of them all is amazing. Other than the two I deleted, I am more than satisfied with all the rest. So yes. I approve of your work, your photos will be in the latest AR magazine as well as the AR calendar and I will save some of the best ones for when Vogue want us to have our input. I am highly impressed by your work. I will be writing your references and I will have them sent to your college.”

Raj almost jumped for joy. He jumped out of his chair and shook Arnav’s hand like crazy.

“Thank you so much sir! You don’t understand how much this means to us!”

“I feel as though this achievement means more to you than it does to your friend.”

Arnav looked at Khushi, who got out of her chair slowly and stood up.

“No it’s nothing like that sir, thank you for this, this is an amazing opportunity for the both of us and we are highly grateful to you for doing this to us.”

“Well, it’s been a long morning, I assume the both of you will want to go and celebrate.”

Arnav rose from his chair and extended his hand to Raj.

“It’s been good to have you today.”

Raj shook Arnav’s hand and smiled.

“The pleasure was all ours sir.”

Raj began to leave the room when he realised Khushi wasn’t following him out. He turned and saw Khushi simply staring at the great ASR. He walked back over to her and reached for her and guided her out. Khushi left all the time thinking about everything that had happened today. How was she going to manage now she knew the truth?
