Khushi got back home and started to take her shoes off when Lavanya came and ambushed her with a tonne of questions.
“Sooo how did it go!?”
“It was okay?”
“That’s all you ever say, surely there’s more to be said.”
“Honestly La, I don’t know what to say. I mean it was nice to be with him but…”
“But…”
“It doesn’t mean anything.”
“He must be interested in you though, otherwise why would he ask you out?”
“I don’t know, but I honestly don’t understand why he would be interested in someone like me.”
“Because you’re gorgeous?”
Khushi shook her head and walked over to her room so that she could get changed. She had to admit, she did have a nice time out with Arnav, and she was definitely attracted to him. What was there not to be attracted to? He was smart, successful, sexy…
“You’re so interested in him, it’s written all over your face.”
“LA! Get out of my room!”
Khushi threw a pillow in Lavanya’s direction who ducked and ran out of the room laughing. She walked over and shut the door and leaned again it. Arnav was certain attractive, but he was also most definitely out of her league…
*****
“Hey Khushi, there’s a package here for you?”
“For me? I haven’t ordered anything though?”
“It looks like a present. And it’s heavy. Come and open it or I’m opening it.”
Khushi rushed out of her bedroom and went to open the parcel that had arrived. It wasn’t particularly large, however it was heavy.
“What on earth?”
She began to peel away the layers of paper to find a stack of beautiful books. Khushi picked on up and looked at the cover and the binding.
“Books? How boring.”
“No Lavanya look… They’re all classics.”
“I’m going to act like I understand why they’re so interesting.”
Khushi shook her head. She loved La, but sometimes she really didn’t understand how they were such good friends. If Khushi was chalk, Lavanya was definitely cheese. They never understood why the other was interested in what they were interested in, but they managed to make it work any way.
“You must have ordered them and forgotten about it.”
“No La. Look at the condition of these books, they’re immaculate.”
“Well when you buy books you do expect them to be like that.”
“No I mean, that they’re old and they look immaculate.”
“So?”
Khushi flipped open the book on top and her mouth dropped open.
“It’s a first edition.”
“Yeah so?”
“It means that one of these books are worth more than this apartment.”
“You’re joking?”
“I’ve never been more serious.”
Khushi looked through all the books and indeed, they were all first editions.
“Who would send you such expensive…”
Lavanya’s eyes lit up as she looked to Khushi. Khushi shook her head.
“No way, why would he…”
“Who else? Do you know anyone else who has money to spare to send you such expensive books?”
“No but…”
“Oh my god Khushi do you know what this means! It means he really likes you!”
“But he hasn’t even tried to reach out to me since the day we met for coffee.”
“What is this if this isn’t him reaching out?”
“I can’t accept these.”
“What why?!”
“Because La! These books are worth more money than either of us could even imagine. I can’t keep something like these.”
Walking back into her bedroom, Khushi pulled her phone out of her pocket and went scrolling for Arnav’s number. However before she could even start thinking about what she wanted to say, a message from him came through.
*My bounty is as boundless as the sea, My love as deep; the more I give to thee, The more I have, for both are infinite.*
Khushi couldn’t help but smile, he was quoting Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet.
Before she could respond another message came through.
*These books have been in my possession for a long time and I have treasured them like nothing else. Today I’m giving them to you in the hope you’ll treasure them too.*
*Arnav I can’t accept these.*
*Please accept them, I know you’ll put them to much more use than I have.*
*They’re so expensive though.*
*Please Khushi, they’re a gift from me to you.*
Khushi looked at her phone for a long time, what was she meant to say. She didn’t want to keep these because she knew she could never repay him for something like this, but at the same time she didn’t know how she could say no to him. She didn’t want to persist that she didn’t want them and offend him…
*Okay, I’ll keep them… Thank you ever so much for them.*
*You’re very welcome. I was wondering, would you like to go out for dinner tonight?*
*Tonight?*
*Yes.*
*I’d love to.*
*Great, I’ll pick you up at 8.*
“La help me!”
Lavanya came rushing into the room and Khushi handed over her phone.
“What am I meant to do?!”
“You go out with him of course.”
“I don’t know anything about him! I can’t keep going out with him and accepting expensive gifts!”
“I know what you mean, but Khushi he seems genuinely interested in you.”
“But at the same time it feels like he’s trying to buy me over. I mean who just hands over such expensive books over to a girl they’ve just met.”
“This is ASR Khushi, the value of those books are probably like pocket money to him.”
“La, am I out of my depth here?”
“Maybe a little, but you are going to meet him tonight and you’re going to thank him properly for these books.”
Lavanya walked over to Khushi’s wardrobe and started pulling out different outfits, when a thought hit her.
“Wait.”
“What happened?”
“How does he know where I live?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well he sent the books and he said he’d pick me up at 8, but I’ve never told him our address.”
“So you think he’s stalking you now?”
“La be serious na! How does he know?!”
“Well when I wrote to him about the interview I must have added my address somewhere! Come on Khushi, it’s not that big of a deal!”
Lavanya went back to rummaging through Khushi’s wardrobe, but Khushi couldn’t help but feel a little bit uneasy with everything that was going on. What was going on? And why did she have such a weird feeling about it all?
Within 10 minutes, Lavanya had managed to find an outfit for Khushi to wear. She’d pulled out a dark purple dress with a black sparkly shrug. She then rushed to her own room and pulled out a pair of sparkly black heels.
“Are you sure this will do?”
“You can’t go wrong with an outfit like this. And knowing ASR you guys are probably going to some 10 star restaurant so we need to make sure you look as appropriate as possible.
“I don’t know if I can do this.”
Lavanya stopped and cupped Khushi’s face.
“What’s wrong?”
“I don’t know… I just…”
“If you really don’t want to see him, then just say no.”
“No, its not that… It’s just… I don’t know La.”
“Tell you what. You go and meet him today, and depending on how you feel after we can take the next steps. If you still feel as confused, then we’ll put an end to this business with Raizada. However, if you feel like you have more of a sense of direction, then its cool.”
Khushi nodded, this sounded like a smart idea. She looked at the time and realised she didn’t have to start getting ready for a while still. She decided to sit in silence and mentally prepare herself for another outing with Arnav Singh Raizada.
